My ex-husband's father was a close friend of John Wayne's.
He has very fond memories of Wayne rolling around on the floor playing with him when he was just a little boy.
John Wayne even changed Mike's diapers and babysat for him a couple of times when he was an infant. (he doesn't remember that of course)
But he does remember years worth of love and friendship from him.
Here are some memorable quotes from John Wayne:
America and The Flag
"We've made mistakes along the way, but that's no reason to start tearing up the best flag God ever gave to any country."
"Sure I wave the American flag. Do you know a better flag to wave? Sure I love my country with all her faults. I'm not ashamed of that, never have been, never will be. I was proud when President Nixon ordered the mining of Haiphong Harbor, which we should have done long ago, because I think we're helping a brave little country defend herself against Communist invasion. That's what I tried to show in The Green Berets and I took plenty of abuse from the critic
His Greatest Disappointment
"Ever since we moved to California, I loved the sea. More than anything else, I wanted to go to Annapolis and become an officer in the Navy. It was a terrible disappointment when I didn't make it. In a way, I guess I never really got over it...."
If you click the link below, and then scroll down to the picture of John Wayne, you'll see links to spoken word audio files (.wav) by John Wayne. Some jukebox type audio players (MusicMatch and others) will not play this particular .wav format. MS Media Player will play them, but I'm not sure about Quicktime players.

American History in Patriotic Sounds and Music
Duke was my late husband' favorite actor. Our first date was going to see him in "The Quiet Man" w/Maureen O'Hara. I bought the CD just to relive those marvelous scenes by both of them and the pleasure my husband and I had shared.

Great article. Thanks for posting it. It's also a good reminder of how articulate President Reagan was before his illness started to affect him.
