I rarely watch American Idol, but have followed the "drama" on the news. Do the voters call into a 900 number, where they actually pay to cast a vote?
If so, get rid of the public voting, and let the three obnoxious pundits who give their opinions, ad nauseum, make the final decisions. Sound to me like it's all about the $$$s.

Do the voters call into a 900 number, where they actually pay to cast a vote? No, they're 800 numbers. Toll-free. If you vote by text messaging, you pay the usual rate though for whatever plan you've got with AT&T. (Usually ten cents a shot.)

Just an 800 number.
The wife and are started watching the show following the Lady Elton John charges of racism. We're avide watchers now...it's too funny.
A 15 year old boy getting death threats because someone else's favorite was kicked of instead of them. People complaining that no talent contestants remain when better contestants leave.
It's kind of like watching the last Reform Party convention with an MTV twist.
