That's what usually happens to me: the "big scenes" come to me in a flash of inspiration, but then I have to figure out how to fit them together, which is challenging. I guess that's good, though--a number of authors I've read recommend to write with the end of your story in mind so you know where it's going and can orient it accordingly.

What type of fanfic was it originally? Mine started as something to do for last Halloween! But I think it brought together a lot of things that have been in the back of my mind for years. A whole alternate history and future history have come to me as I've been writing--I haven't told you much about the future history part yet, but. . .you'll see :)
