When I was in the seventh grade, I flew alone to North Carolina to visit a preschool buddy of mine. My parents and baby brother flew in a week later (dad rented a Bonanza) to pick me up and we flew to Fredericksburg to visit dad's first cousins. One lived in Williamsburg, and the other two in Fredericksburg. We did the Colonial thing. It was incredible! While we were there, we borrowed one of the cousins' cars and drove to DC. We were gonna spend the day at the Smithsonian. Umm, well, we spent the day at the Air and Space Museum... Had to go back the next day to see the memorials, the White House, and Congress. I never did get to see the Museum of Natural History. That one is a must for the next time I get over that way.

We took the older two boys to DC for the 4th of July in 1987. We also spent an entire day in the Air & Space Museum as well, but that's what the boys wanted to see. The best fun, though, was sitting on the Mall near the Capitol on the 4th, listening to Mstislav Rostropovich lead the National Symphony and watching the fireworks!
