Clearer: I don't like the idea of any average woman ~thinking she should rely on~ using a hand-to-hand weapon on a likely-to-be-stronger intruder.
Yeah, I agree - I'm not very strong, and I don't have impermeable skin. I don't want the bad guys getting near enough to me that I have to use hand-to-hand.
If a woman is going to use a hand-to-hand weapon, she has to rely on technique rather than strength. For instance a mistake you often see in movies is that a woman tries to wield a knife with an overhead stabbing motion. That's not the best way to use a knife if you're not a strong person. But anyone of any size can stab and slash effectively. Likewise when women punch, women generally don't have as much upper-body strength as men, so if they try to outpunch a man by punching the way a man punches they're likely to lose. However there is a way women can punch which is biomechanically efficient for a woman's body, using the entire body mass to drive the punch rather than just upper-body strength. A woman may only weigh 100 pounds, but 100 pounds suddenly accelerating in one direction and slamming into your windpipe can kill a 300-pound man. Likewise it only takes a few pounds of pressure at the right angles to break an elbow or knee. Few guys will know how to defend against a woman suddenly picking up their foot and stomping down on the side of their knee with 100 pounds of weight.
