From a review in U.S. News & World Report: For the first time! In American theaters! It's the original, uncut version of . . . Godzilla !!! The black-and-white 1954 movie is a classic in Japan, but American audiences got stuck with a cheesy, dubbed version with 40 minutes edited out and American actor Raymond Burr gratuitously edited in. Now the original has finally made it to the United States, with a new print and subtitles, and it's a surprisingly good movie. Sure, Godzilla is played by a dude in a rubber suit, but there's also great music, a love triangle, an antinuclear message that was watered down in the previous U.S. version. The monster's rampage across Tokyo, breathing radiation and stomping destruction through a city that had been firebombed less than a decade earlier, is genuinely heart stopping. Um... well.... maybe I'll rent that next time I'm exercising.
Or maybe not.
I'm trying to talk the pool board into showing a movie like that one night for a "Dive-In Movie." We could set up a sushi bar...
They ain't buyin' it yet.
