Free Republic Has Gone To The Birds.......
Posted on 05/01/2004 4:06:36 PM PDT by chambley1
Let's see, all those requests to post pics of skinny Ann Coulter (perhaps from those lonely ones renting something akin to Ted Kasynski's cabin in Montana).
Then there's caption this, and caption that. What value is there in this?
In the interim, the Republic heads deeper into a liberal quagmire and an otherwise worthy conservative forum is slowly turning into a doormat for those with nothing better to do than to turn this arena into a circus.
It's a shame.

Your complaint reminds me of the common complaint about how the music industry has become a cesspool and that because banal recordings by Brittany Spears and Ice-Cube top the charts, that civilization is going to hell in a handbasket.
Yet an educated consumer can spend a lifetime exploring over 400+ years of superb music and still only scratch the surface of it. From Bach to Beethoven to the American jazz and blues of the early 20th Century, there is more than enough great music out there to make collecting music worthwhile. As well, there is still a lot of great music being made today, though you probably won't hear much of it on Top 40 radio or MTV. You just have to dig beneath the surface a little.
It's the same thing with Free Republic. At first glance, it may appear to be dominated with "What is the Greatest riff in Rock Music" and "Caption This" threads, along with the silly 20,000 reply LOTR threads. But dig beneath the surface and there is still so much substance being posted here that there are just not enough hours in the day to absorb it all.
I've been with Free Republic since the very beginning and it is far richer (content-wise) then it was in the early days. You just have to look beneath the surface.
BTW, I find the other lighter threads a pleasant diversion from time to time. They have their place here too. Even the 20,000 reply LOTR threads though I can't possibly imagine anybody with enough time on their hands to follow those!

What my wife called me . . .
OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE character disorder . . . OCD in other texts.
Thankfully, am about 10,000% less so now. That was more than 20 years ago.
