The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well I'm going home and change and then to the stables. Don't know if I'll get any riding in but I need to. I'll be gone Thru-Sun.

I'm back. I didn't get to ride. The vet showed up. He said Sarah Lee younger than we thought, around 9 and that she looked really good except her respirations a little fast but she was sweating good. He gave her shots (in a hurry so I didn't ask to do) and said to keep up the wormer.

She showed a little bit of attitude. Got huffy when she saw him and fought him looking at her teeth and her shots. Pawing and stomping her foot too. She settled right down after he left though.

Evening!

Glad she checked out Good! BTW... I don't know what you expect of her, but don't worry about her not being cheerful about being checked... All horses show attitude about having fingers in their mouth and their teeth looked at, and shots hurt... Most horses at least flinch when you slam a needle in them, and many smart ones know exactly what's coming and dance around a little. They should stay manageable, but I would suspect a horse that never objected to anything might actually be dead ;~D. You will eventually have to have their teeth 'floated' or filed down, and most horses have to be sedated for that. It isn't a training issue.

I just checked. It's making the curve. If it hits NO, they are going to be in a world of hurt :'( You are in Alabama, right? What part?

Thanks, I am in the Northern part so hopefully, only light winds and rain will make it this far up from landfall.

Still have a lot of hay to get into the barn before it gets here. : (

LOL! Thanks for the offer. : )

Using an old "planter" to haul them from the field to the barn.

I wasn't sure what to expect since she's been so docile. Just amused that she showed her displeasure before he started like she knew what was coming. When Okie got his shots I expecting him to jump but he just stood there. He was not happy getting his teeth floated but tolerated ok without drugs. Then he goes and sits back and breaks the lead rope during his first shoeing . I've decided all I can do is expect the best and prepare for the worst :')

Only have tomorrow to finish baling what got wet the other night. Rain is expected to start here tomorrow night. What hay we cannot get into the barn will be moved to high spots in the field so they will not be in standing water puddles. The picture of the fresh cut hay field I posted a few days ago, it will be under water after that much rain. All the hay will have to be moved out of there.

Towmorrow will be a long day.

Just know that they aren't machines, that some are easier for some things than others, and some of the stuff we do to them is unpleasant and seems pretty unfair from their perspective. I'd correct and calm and manage but not be angry about a reluctance to get a shot. You've done medicine with toddlers, I imagine.... their ability to understand of the benefit of shots is far better than a horse.

Some vets have more patience and better horse sense than others. The one I have now can get a lot more cooperation out of a horse than some I have had, just by his calm manner. But I will sometimes cover their near eye with my hand and talk and distract for shots, it helps them not tense up before the shot, which makes it easier to stick the needle than if their muscles are all tense. With teeth, the vets themselves are usually better at managing their head and I stay out of the way. If they act up too much, like my pony, we sometimes corner her in a stall.

Is it going to be near dry enough to get good bales out of? I picture those round bales being pretty explosive if they aren't dry when you roll them.

She wasn't bad at all except maybe for that little bit of foot stomping afterwards. I've read they do that with nervousness though. He was really fast with the shot. The jumping after done. I just rubbed her head. She didn't get a lolly pop but I had her pellets and Texas tea waiting:')

We will tedder the hay that is laying out in the field. That will fluff it up and let air and sunshine into it. It should finish drying out quickly then.

They catch fire if they are rolled to quickly, spontaneous combustion. Rolled hay goes through a heat, curing process. It is best to wait until they are cool to the touch before you stack them in the barn. These are not being stacked, just put into the barn until the rain passes.
