The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I like mine now because it has the tack but I also like the open trailors. Actually what I would like is one of those drivable RVs that have a trailor in the back:')

Good night ladies...

Wake the thread up again tomorrow when you have fresh stories to tell... or even the same story we heard before if it's a good one!

I'm afraid to go over there to lurk. Eddie beating the keyboard and the holiest of the holy there. Probably gonna get banned. Want to peek and tell me how much trouble he's in?

Naw , he is just acting like an angry husband .

Get a Sooner trailer, slant load. More money up front, but they last forever and are easy to load/unload. You can get them from 2 horse up to 6, in gooseneck or bumper hitch. They have a good warranty, too.

I have never had any trouble with loading. We ride on my trainer's trailer (a 6-horse slant-load Sooner) and since Gracie used to be a broodmare, she greets all trailers with glee -- might be a Night of Love on the other end of the trip, doncha know . . . :-D

8:30, my horse is saddled, I'm having one last cup of coffee then I'm off on the first ride of the day.

It is an absolutely beautiful day. I've had 2 hummingbirds in my flowers this morning.

Anybody else got any plans to ride today? Mack promised to post the pictures of the palamino later this afternoon.

Thur my riding day. Don't know how long I'll get though. We are taking the residents on a field trip to go fishing at the pier at 2:30. I'm going to stop by the stables on the way back.

Ever heard of this? My instructor says my horse has a strong male dominance and doesn't know he's not a stallion. He hangs out around the mares (and I mean literally) Almost embarressing lol My instructor says she's been observing him and that's why he get's hyper with me sometimes and so easy going and gentle at other times. He has a harem of about 20 and doesn't know what to do. Is this possible?

I saw this post the other day and planned on responding that evening and forgot till today while I was out riding I thought of it.

I'm sorry to say this but your instructor does not know what she is talking about. I know this horse Cindy. He was gelded very very young. He is not a hyper horse.

Please understand I am not saying this is a scolding or condesending manner. I am trying to help you.

This horse is acting the way he is because you have not established dominence over him. You have let him act this way. He is a young horse. We talked about this numerous times BEFORE you took him home. You told me you would do the things I told you to. If you had done those things you would have gotten the upper hand and he would respect you. Now he has the upper hand and no respect. Now it is going to be harder for you to get it back. I gave you very easy specfic things to do. Even a beginner could do the simple things I told you to do. You did not do them.

I'll tell you one more time:

1. DO NOT GIVE TREATS. Do not keep him in a stall.

2. At this time is what you need to do is commit to 2 weeks of serious non-stop, everyday work on him.

3. For 3 days go over there in the morning, saddle him up, tie him up, and let him stand till you get off work in the evening. At the end of the first two day, do not ride him, just unsaddle and turn him loose.

4. On the 3rd day, after he has stood tied all day, lunge him for an hour ON A LUNGE LINE, DO NOT FREE LUNGE. Do not stop even if he is doing it right. Reverse directions every 10-15 minutes. DO NOT let him go at any speed other then a nice smooth trot. If he does ANYTHING, jerk his head off, then immediatly start him up again. USE PROPER VOICE COMMANDS. Whoa, easy, trot. At the end of an hour IF he is behaving well, unsaddle turn him loose.

5. On the fourth day, saddle him, tie him, lunge him till he does it properly, then get on him and ride him for 2 hours. Even if it's in the arena. A person with a young horse is going to have to do things that are boring. I understand about not likeing the arena. But I do it when I have too. Doing the boring, and or tuff stuff is a test of someone who REALLY wants to ride.

6. Ride him everyday for 2 weeks.

A beginner rider cannot afford to let a horse get the upper hand. They don't have the experience and know how to deal with the little things. It is nothing to feel ashamed about, it is a learning process. But during the process you have to do what it takes to keep the horse behaving in a manner a beginner can handle.

I have watched you let this horse get worse and worse, and it is going to continue if you don't get it stopped. You/anyone, even with no more experience then you have, can do what I just listed, especially with that horse.

You are making the horse look bad with the things you post, which in turn is probably making some people wonder what the hell I was doing selling you that horse. People are probably thinking I took advantage of you, or I don't know what I am talking about. He is/was a perfect horse for what you wanted. You just need to do what I have told you like you told me you would hundreds of times before you came and got him.

I admire and respect your horse knowledge and will review your suggestions this evening. Thank you. If I have made you or my horse look bad I apologize. That was not my intention. I am very happy with my horse and would buy him again in a heartbeat just the way he is right now. I won't be posting any more horse posts here but will just continue to lurk and learn . Later

You are taking this way to personal.. Please do not leave. Did you read the part that said I was trying to help you. That is all I have ever done. I have told you that numerous times. Your running off every time someone says something to you that you don't want to hear is not fair to those of us who are trying to help you. I posted that post on the open board because I have done it privately in the past, and you didn't listen. But you continue to post stuff that makes the horse look bad. The post that I was responding too was sent to ALL. Why are you doing this. You have told me numerous times to point out when you are not doing right. You sent the questions on the open board, I answered now your leaving. Thanks.

I am not going to ask you to come back again. I'm tired of having to be so careful of what I say, especially when you asked for it. Do you want me to pat you on the head and tell you you are doing great, and then later have to deal with one hearing that you got hurt or two that you have a horse you won't ride, but will not sell either because you love it. We talked about all this stuff before you bought him. This is exactly the kind of thing I was trying to keep from happening then.

It takes a bigger person to admit a mistake and fix it then to just run off.

Nobody likes an "a$$ eating" even if it's for their own good:') I'm not running just re-grouping and going to fix some problems. Not good company right now. I'll be back after I get what you told me to, done. It may not seem like it but I really do appreciate the advice. Problem is that I thought I was doing ok. Shows what I know huh? :')

It was not an ass chewing Cindy. It was an attention getter. You were not taking the things he is doing seriously enough. I've been trying and trying to get you to do this stuff privately, haven't I????

If he's walking around showing off for mares, he is not doing good. He is getting bold. The next thing he could do is to start charging at them rather there is a fence there or not.

Mack is getting pictures ready to post for me. I mainly wanted you to see the difference in his color from what he was when I first got him.

The top picture is the palamino today, the same horse in post #33 which was taken a few months ago.

The second picture is of the pile of rocks that have surfaced over the years in our arena that I have piled up with the bobcat.

The third picture is of Rusty just because he looked pretty:)
