The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread
Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads
. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts
look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in
. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics
land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news
. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I have a trailor but its not slant and old and heavy. I needed one when the SA stock show going on and couldn't get picky. Got lot's of rust. We were going to sand blast and paint it but we have so much time lol. We are thinking about just runnng it up to the action in Houston and selling it if we can find another one. I think I want a stock but maybe a slant better for long distances. We'll see. Mine works but the horse puts up a fight. I know I should have been working on it but since we loaded him the day after we left Beckys I haven't messed with it. I take him over to get things out of the tack room. He points those ears and locks his feet just by the front of it. I think next week I'll start feeding him in it.

I really want to join the local mounted search and rescue unit! Now, I would love to do something like that.

I guess it would depend on the dog. Seems to me that they are in most danger when they are small, once my chickens get big, the dogs never look at them. When there are new chicks (I keep them in a dog crate), Susie, my Jack Russell just lays in front of the crate and stares at them for hours. Not sure what she would do if she could get to them.
Nikki my old dog, blue heeler never pays any attention to any of them.
Grizzly, youngest one of the three, chased the bigs one for a while, but not so much now.. I got him to keep coyotes aways. Seems to be working.

Ferrier out yesterday here. Said getting better but needs shoes one more time.

Those old straight loads are hard on big horses. Bay was a problem loader in one, but he hurt himself in there, so it wasn't just stubborness, but survival instinct. You can work with him and fix the trailer problem in the horse, but it might be easier on everyone to just get a nice new one.
I like stock trailers, particularly if you can let them ride loose on long distances. I may go that way when we are looking! A slant would be good if you can step up in price, but

I'm afraid to go over there to lurk. Eddie beating the keyboard and the holiest of the holy there. Probably gonna get banned. Want to peek and tell me how much trouble he's in?

Gidget is plenty prey driven, she goes after the bunnies in the yard, but not so much birds... I just fall in love with the ducklings at the feed store. I could keep them seperated while little... but I'd like to let them mingle later. I figured one of those big grey farm geese might be able to kick her butt.

I have a two horse slant, but it's not an expense aluminum one. We have a place here that builds them locally, so I think it was like $3200. it has a nice tack room in front. Bumper pull. Mack says it's a bit heavy, but I don't want to trade it because it's just perfect for camping in when I go with the horse. I just shovel it out, set up my cot and portapotty, and a camptable with stove and I'm set.

NO:), I'm trying my best to stay away too. But couldn't resist the horse thread. I really am going to get Mack to post pictures tomorrow of Harley. You won't believe the change.

Welcome CS. Yep I own Okie or he owns me. I haven't figured out which yet lol. Seriously, he's adjusting to Tx well and I'm having a lot of fun with him.

I've heard geese are pretty aggressive:). I've got a Giant Black (that's a breed) Rooster, and he has gotten after my dogs and they make a wide circle around him:). My dogs have always chased rabbits nd squirrels too. Maybe they just know that since you've had it penned up for awhile it must be off limits. I started keeping chickens only to keep ticks down. I swear we do not have any ticks on my 5 acres. I never even collected the eggs for years.

Sounds perfect!
I think if we have our choice we'd get either a three horse slant or an equivalent size stock trailer... bumper pull too.

Well tell Mack to peek. He'll get a kick out of it and they aren't going to stay up long. Hell, the whole thread may get pulled. Fights on.

Where's your friend? :')
To: HairOfTheDog
I know. I had to do a lot of word associations
To: HairOfTheDog
I would get a stock or slant. Just easier to load a horse into.
When the kids were home, and we were hauling 4 horses we had a gooseneck stock trailer that someone had put dividers in to make it a slant. That was the biggest thing I've ever driven. We had a 4 door dualie and then that trailer and it had a nice tack room at the front besides room for 4 horses.
