The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

On a scale of 1-10 I'd say he's a 6. He's been fine all afternoon, out browsing on the dry weeds in the pasture.

But in the last several minutes, we was walking around with his head down looking like he was gonna lay down or roll (but his tail was in the air), the pony saw him and copy-cat rolled, though Bay never went down, just paced. Then the pony took off runnin', and he trotted after. Now he's just standing, but he's still holding his tail up funny. I think he's got a big fart comin'. ;~D

She does keep him young....

I just went out and had an odd sequence.... I went to fill the hay racks, and while I was standing there in the lean-to with hay in my hand, he walked in and layed down. He seems quiet, but that is really unusual behavior. Even the pony is bewildered. I hollered at ecurbh to come out with the camera. Still he lay there.

What do you make of horse that lays down when I walk out with dinner? He seems quiet. Still laying there as I post.

Pinging the horse list for any advice you can offer. I have a sick horse.

Ping!

This morning Bay was restless, laying down, getting up, not looking right. I posted about it starting here on this thread this morning.... following that are the reports after the vet left, and my situation tonight.

I just wonder what I should be doing here.

Wish I could help. All I know to do is call the vet back and comfort him. Don't know how it works with horses but I have spent many nights with other animals just talking and holding them.

All I can offer is my heartfelt prayers and goodwill that Bay gets healthy. I've never had a horse colic, but he looks a little uncomfortable Sounds like your vet was pretty knowledgeable and has things under control.

I just called the vet and described this.... and tested whether he'd eat by putting grain right under him. Won't eat grain, sick horse.

The vet's on his way. Again.

Sorry to hear about Bay. It's good the vet is coming back out.

I remember they would give the horses at the track a little corn oil in their feed for impactions, and then walk the horse for hours and hours. I hope Bay will be alright. Please let us know how he's doing when you get a chance.

That's an adorable picture of the Pony watching over Bay/ sorry it was taken under distress though.

Well, the vet came out, saw that Bay was indeed still sick, he was down and reluctant to get up when the vet got here. Though he had surprisingly normal heart rate and stomach sounds.

He gave him another Banamine injection with a sedative and he did a rectal.... the poo he pulled out was rock hard he said (dehydration) but later, after testing it, there was not a lot of sand in it.

He did a stomach tube and pumped a lot of oil into him. Cross our fingers and hope that if he is impacted, that the oil will help it pass through.

He took about two bites of grain after this ordeal, and he is now nibbling hay now, he didn't lay down immediately... I am to call the vet if he won't eat breakfast. The vet is not expecting a serious episode tonight.

I read thru all the posts before responding.

Your vet has done everything I have seen done, so now the rest is wait and see.

I'm sure he will recover. But I would be trying to figure why dehydrated???? Any clues??

Oh, gosh. Horse tummies are so darned delicate!

My instinct would be to keep him up and moving, but since the vet is there and has examined him, I would just do exactly what he says.

Prayers for Bay!

Glorious Saint Martin, beloved patron of horses and horsemen, you served God in humility and confidence on earth. Now you enjoy His beatific vision in heaven. You persevered till death and gained the crown of eternal life. Remember now our concern over our friend's dear horse, and intercede for us and her before the Throne, that Bay may be restored to perfect health. We ask in the name of your master and ours, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
