The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

"Monday nights next year, starting in Jan."

Darn, 24 doesn't start til Jan., but 2 hour episodes would be good. The 1 hour ones go buy in a flash.

Before ecurbh I had a little trouble finding people I am compatible enough to want to ride with... Have one friend that wants to run down trail and gallop all the time. I am not opposed to a little fast work but she just likes speed and I just like quiet peace. I was thinking of joining one of the clubs. Might still do that just because you get to find out about trails I wouldn't find on my own.

You sound just like me. I stopped going to the organized trail rides because there are always idiots in the group. They don't get it that when one horse runs most of the others will want to go too, and can get real stupid when you hold them back. Anyway I only go with peopel I know in small groups. I especially hate riding with kids. Kids have no trial manners and want to do nothing but run, run, run.

I think that is why I liked competitve trail riding so much. EVERYONE is on their best behavior because you don't know where a judge might be. The pace is set for you, and unless you have set up to ride with someone your pretty much on your own.

We started watching it last year. We rented the DVD's for the first season and was hooked. It's about the only show I watch, other then movies occasionally.

I reccommend it higly, but besure to rent the seasons in order. There is 24 episodes each season. Each season covers one day in the life of Jack Bauer:). He works for CTU, Counter terriost unit for the US govenment. Each season has been better then the one before, but you should watch them all, IN ORDER. There are 6 discs with 4 episodes each. We watched 2 episodes a night usually. That is about all you could take:) Pretty intense. Tonight ended the third season.

Yeah - I like my cowboy friend Bob to ride with, but he's tough to get to go on my schedule, plns of his own.

I just can't wait now till ecurbh and I have another horse, a trailer, and the ability to go whenever we want.

Oh, I love your "pony" window picture!

24 is a show on Fox. It's about a government agent named Jack Bauer. He is trying to fight terrorism. It's called 24 because its about 24 hours in the agents life. Right now the story is he's trying to stop a terrorist from releasing a bio weapon into the population ( they had a scary episode, where some of the bio-weapon was used in a hotel )It has lots of suspense and plot twists. A good show if you like this this type -suspense /drama.

Trailers make a big difference, but I pretty spoiled. I can take off right from where I live and ride probably 10-15 miles of trails.

Just today tho, just since yesterday, a fence was put across one of my favorite trails. Almost ran into it. It is one of the few places where the trial is smooth, no rocks, no hanging trees and about a mile long but some really neat tight turns that are a blast at a gallop:) I usually long trot it one direction then lope it back. I was long trotting and there was the fence. Can't figure out who put it up and why. There is nothing there but brush land, and the fence only goes across the trail the land is NOT fenced in. Mack said just go around, but I'm afraid someone may be doing something illegal out there and I don't want to ride up on them. I've done that abefore with car thieves out there stripping a car. Scary thing.

Well, they are at least trying to block the trail for some reason and you don't know how bad they are willing to enforce it. I'd be nervous to go around it too.

I always respect posted properities, but this doesn't make any sense. But that actually makes me more nervous then if I knew why:)

Yeah. It's odd. Is the trail also used by vehicles someone might be trying to block?

Over the last few years we have started having alot of kids on 4 wheelers back there. But still if there is NOTHING there why does it hurt? There has actually been alot more traffic back there period. A few months ago it was obvious that some one drove down this trail with either a dualie or pulling a trailer. It had to be someone who did not care about their vehicle as the trail in most places is only wide enough for not much more then a 4 wheeler, and all this is happening at least a mile off the real road.

Like I said in other places I have come across car theives actually stripping a car once, several times stolen cars that I reported, there have been meth labs hauled out. This didn't use to happen:(

Looks like we could get some rain here today.

That might be why, though... the owner of the property perhaps doesn't want the abandoned cars and meth lab garbage on the property, and it has nothing against you. It'd be nice to ask 'em.

This didn't use to happen:(

I know. Here, they are considering gating off more roads in the state forest because our meth labs end up on all those roads, cookin' their stuff and leaving their garbage. It's the creeps and not the environuts that are threatening access to the state forest here.

Good morning everyone! I got an email from freeper Ramonan with really neat pictures to show you.... some explanation of them is included here, but I hope he'll be along to talk more about them and about his riding.

This is Freeper Ramonan and his wife with their horses on trail in California.

Ramonan wrote: "That scenery is not there any more. A lost hunter shot a flare on October 25, 2003, and burned up most of the National Forest. It was named the Cedar Fire, and it almost burned our house down too. "

"My other horse, Suzy, a Quarter filly-5 years old."

"What I used to do. On September 30, 2001, I retired from the California Highway Patrol because they have a "mandatory retirement at 60 " policy."

Below: Is this a cool picture or what! This is Ramonan's quarter horse pictured above and what he used to do. He is a retired police horse... I bet he's bomb proof on trail!

Wow! That picture with the helocopter is amazing. No hair, or mane blowing.

Movie horses will be good choices for being "bomb proof" also.

I think it might be a forced perspective illusion too, and the helicopter is farther behind than he looks. Still would be loud.

I have often marveled at using horses for crowd control, I'd feel pretty vulnerable on a horse that could be slapped or poked or spooked by an unruly crowd, but I understand that for a person on the ground, especially one unaccustomed to horses, a horse can be pretty intimidating.

An episode of "Cops" during Mardi-gras showed just how effective, mounted police can be.

Speaking of movie horses, there is a very interesting special feature on the new Return of the King DVD about the CGI horses they used for the battle scenes.

They wired up a horse on a motion capture soundstage and galloped, walked and trotted it back and forth to get the basis for the animated horse movements. Then they put animated horses alongside real live horses in the final product. Neat stuff! So well done you can't even tell which horses are real and which are digitally rendered.

That is cool, and allows for them to film better action without risk of injury to horses or riders. The early days of Hollywood were not easy on equine actors and many bad things were done for the sake of a scene.

I saw how they do those video games that way. Wiring up humans to get the effects. Amazing technology.

Ouch! I remember how they used to use running "w's" and tripping lines. Made you sick. I was so glad that was outlawed. You could tell, when movies were made in other countries. The old "spaghetti westerns" were especially bad.
