The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

When we came by the ranch the lights were on and he saw them and said that he was ready to start roping. I told him that when he got really good at it he could teach Dot how to do it and rope off her. He like the sound of that. :~}

We told Jerry and Donna to plan on riding at your house not this saturday but next, so I think they will actually come this time. Donna's ready to ride out there again, she really likes it.

Well I guess you're doing some other reading:), I'm going to go feed horses then hit the sack. Want to get Rusty rode tomorrow morning. Then have to check out Belle, and measure everyones feet so Dad can order those boots for me.

Did you see the posts where I said I don't think Harley is going to make it without shoes?

Be sure to call or something sometime tomorrow.

"I don't want to get suckered into a bunch of treatments that don't work."

Yeah, that can be a problem. You said you ride in competitions? I think more people in all aspects of competitive horse sports are using chiropractors now, so you might be able to get references to a good one. Worse comes to worse you could get a bone scan, but that's pricey.

If the mare acts up again you could take the saddle off right away and run your fingers down her back (like the vet does). See if she reacts at any particular point. That might tell you if it is a back problem, and give a general idea of where where the injury is located. Good luck, I hope you are able to figure out what's wrong with her.

PS I see I'm not the only 24 fan on Free Republic, I'm looking forward to the season finale too-LOL

No problem t'all! - I think it is perplexing... and the ~acuteness~ of it to me make it seem like if it is a pain response, it is something like a nerve that can be crimped or pinched and be excruciating, and then -Poof- it fixes itself and she's fine, till it happens again.. Anything less, like a poor fit on the saddle wouldn't be that acute when she is fine other times.

It'd sure be good if it was something that had an answer as to why.

"I do hope you get back into horses again. They're good for the soul"

Sigh..... I know. I wish I could. Course the problem is where I live. To have a horse, I'd have to work 2 or maybe 3 jobs and then I wouldn't have any time to spend with my horse- LOL.

I will definately get one, once my life settles down. (And I move away from this overpriced , over crowded, looney bin of a state).

LOL, Yeah you gotta wish there really was Jack Bauer's in this world taking care of all of us:), and a President like Palmer except for his integrity has slipped a bit this season:(

My mare doesn't ever seem to have a problem any time except under saddle, and as I have two others right now to ride, and she DOES throw really pretty babies, I've pretty much put riding her on a permeant hold. She'll just spend her days now being a brood mare. But if I was really rich, I'd probably have her checked just for curiosty purposes:)

Scrolling this morning.

I meant to comment on this picture. Nice baby:), but of course bay's have always been my favorite. I just don't think any other color shines quit the way a bay does and the black points really makes it stand out:)

I think there is some gene in paints that if they have it you are guaranteed a paint baby everytime???? If they don't have it then it is a gamble????

We breed Rocky to a paint mare one time and got a paint just like the momma except for the baby had black points the momma didn't.

We;ve probably breed Rocky 10 times since we have had him, and I can think of only 1 foal that didn't have the black points. We;ve breed him to sorrels, bays, grays, paints. He always put the black points on them, we just never got the gold in between:), of course on the bays I didn't really care. But from the point of view of selling one of his babies, a buckskin would probably be the easist to sell at the best price. People really are enthralled by that color. Buckskins and paints.

Yeah - Homozygous. The stallion was not homozygous. They usually talk about homozygous genes in marketing stallions, but evidently a mare can also be homozygous and throw color no matter who she is bred to.

I think the black points are dominant in most cases, but not always. Below is palomino foal that came out of a breeding between this buckskin momma and a palomino sire. She turned out to be a gorgeous palomino mare. But I can't find a picture of her as an adult to scan. People like those unusual colors. My brief stint in it with paints, and earlier at the Appaloosa farm, taught me that breeding for a color breed will often break your heart.

One more cup of coffee and I'm off to ride. These nice mornings it's hard to get going. I like sitting in the garden watching the hummingbirds and flowers:).

Mack talked to some lady at a tack store where he had called to order Old Mac boots. The lady told him about these so he did some research. They've only been on the market for 4 months but have had alot of testing. The lady said she had used them and liked them better then Old Mac's because they weren't as bulkey and were easier to put on and off.
