Genesis is one of the four most pretentious rock bands of all time. (If you're curious, the other three are Pink Floyd, Yes, and Emerson Lake & Palmer.)

Oh shut up! ;) 'Rock Lobster' is one of the most kitchy songs around. You have to appreciate that Ricky Wilson played that song with only four strings on his guitar.

Honey, he left her. He's on three now. Try and keep up. I know. I think you replied to the wrong person. ;-)

Steve Hackett's solo material, although criminally underrated, is also very good and I think after he left Genesis he was producing material of far greater quality than Genesis was. "Spectral Mornings" and "Defector are particularly good albums.

I surely thought this would be #1 (shudder):
Afternoon Delight
( Starland Vocal Band )
Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
Gonna grab some afternoon delight
My motto's always been 'when it's right, it's right'
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night?
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day
And we know the night is always gonna be there any way
Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
Looking forward to a little afternoon delight
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Started out this morning feeling so polite
I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn't bite
But you've got some bait a waitin' and I think I might try nibbling
A little afternoon delight
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Please be waiting for me, baby, when I come around
We could make a lot of lovin' 'for the sun goes down
Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
Looking forward to a little afternoon delight
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight!

Or the entire Days of Future Past album by the Moody Blues DOFP was a seminal album in the history of Rock and Roll. A unifying theme and very rich orchestrations -- many of the instruments were played by the Moody Blues. In terms of importance, it is up there with "Dark Side of the Moon." (or don't you cretins like that one either?)
Just out of curiosity what don't you like about that album? From reading this thread it looks like most of you'all are a bunch of "rock" elitists -- a typical reaction of wannabe garage band musicians.

I can't believe that the thread is up to 230 replies and no one has yet mentioned the worst all time song that truly qualifies because it was:
1. a hit
2. impossible to get out of your head
3. totally lacking in all redeeming musical qualities
4. nauseating lyrics so you hated having it stuck in your head
And the winner is: "If you like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain ... "
To: Rummyfan
Remember the criteria..the song had to be a number one seller. Many of the songs listed on the previous 250 plus posts were not number one sellers.
To: idkfa
Ooooh, that's pretty heinous. I almost forgot that one. Now I'll be trying to get it out of my head!
To: kidd
They just wanted to make music. Nothing more, nothing less. They have what I call, 'Mindless music'- stuff so out there and usually about nothing important- it clears my mind completely. Whenever I have to be creative, I pop in a B's CD and get to work.

2. impossible to get out of your head I like Jimmy Buffett, and especially Cheeseburger in Paradise. However, every time I hear it or think of it, I can't get it out of my head for a couple of days! Oh..... d@mn!
