Thank you, Loddy. Mary was for a time avoided by her neighbors who thought her various secretive travels through the lines indicated that she might be a spy. Actually, she was taking food and winter clothing for the Confederate troops in winter quarters prior to and during the series of battles that ended with the Battle of Atlanta. The combined strength of Federal and Confederate armies gathered near Dalton that winter was the largest of the war.
