Regarding the disabled child: don't stop at the initial, or the reconsideration level of the Social Security examinations. Go to the "Hearing Officer" stage where the child and family can present their case before a real live person.

And never pay an attorney to do this: any individual can do it on their own, and save at least a third of the $$$.
