A while back someone discovered Susan Sarandons mother turned out to be a big time W supporter. We had a lot of fun with that here on FR and it made Timmy go ballistic.

No, I'm attacking an anti Semitic kook who happens to be Mel Gibson's father. While acorns rarely fall that far from the tree, I've not seen anything about "The Passion"
Then you are attacking Mel. Since you brought up "acorns" is that your family tree?
"that would lead me to believe that Gibson took any particularly offensive anti Semitic direction with it, other than my understanding that there are inaccuracies that tend to spring from a particular set of language prejudices of his (and which are directly related to an obsession with Latin by certain traditional Roman Catholics).
Maybe you should clarify this. What do you mean by related obseessions?
I thought his public statements on his views on Judaism were pretty weaselly, but if it were my dad, I'd have probably said the same things.
So, supporting your dad is "weaselly".
Again, secular and leftist attacks on The Passion, Mel Gibson and his father have lead to greater movie sales. Thank you Yonif! Are you on the pay roll by any chance? ...stop attacking Christians. Hutton Gibson is no Christian, and gets no quarter from me.

It's a fairly gentle dig and it's not undeserved.
Forgive me, I didn't get the name of your father.

Has Hutton Gibson expressed his views publically that the Holocaust was exaggerated and that there is a Jewish conspiracy to acquire power? If so, why do you think he should escape criticism?

if his views are being "spun" to advance an anti-Christian point of view, then let the critics be known for what they are. Christ haters.

if his views are being "spun" to advance an anti-Christian point of view I think justanotherday believes Mr. Hutton Gibson has been slandered.
While he is probably correct in saying that Hutton's views have been made public in an effort to discredit his son's film, to say Mr. Gibson was slandered is probably a stretch, since it looks like he really did say those things.

Hutton is a flake. He is not evil. He has not hurt anybody (except for maybe some Japanese in WWII.). He is, however, outspoken about some strange, and objectively incorrect, beliefs. The author of this article does a fine and gentle job of calling him on them -- without namecalling or character destruction.
And I saw the Passion. It was a great movie without an anti-Semetic moment. Mel is not his father and he can't choose his parents but it doesn't help anybody's agenda to allow a denial of the scope of the Holocuast to go unchallenged or to imply there is a world-wide Jewish conspiracy of some type.
Concerning Greenspan, I always thought he was some kind of Ayn Rand objectivist despite his Jewish heredity.

With all due respect, it's rather hard to argue that this has nothing to do with Mel Gibson, when the message is written to "Mel Gibson's father", instead of to "Hutton Gibson". True, I guess, however most people know him due to the fact he is Mel Gibson's father, so it isn't surprising that he would use that title. Just like we would this term to describe Bill Clinton's brother, etc.
But believe me, the writer in question is not part of the group against the film or Mel Gibson.
I see this article probably as not just against Hutton, but against people who think like him.

No, he's one of the sheep not stopping to think why the entire world is suddenly talking about an entirely obscure man. He probably knows about it. Its not just about this man, but many other people who think that way around the world. He is laughing at them.
And incidentally, this is a recycled joke with only a few minor changes. I read the original some time ago (maybe on the Onion?) and it had no references to the Gibsons.
Thanks for the info. If you find a link to it please post it.

Attack the father, attack the son. And yes, while Mel's father has made some gross mistakes, The Passion's attackers have used Mel's fathers statements to attack the film and the message. I am not denying that. But I find it hard to believe why you are concluding that this person writing the article is part of the attackers...

Thanks for the info. If you find a link to it please post it. I didn't find the one I thought I recalled with no Gibson reference. But I did find the same one all over the place attributed to some guy named Dan Barash. This one might be the original source.

and in no way is he trying to descredit the movie Passion,Up until Mel Gibson made his most recent movie how many articles were written about his father? I don't think many. Now all of a sudden the attacks intensify. Why now? Coincidence? To say it has nothing to do with the movie is stretching it a bit - don't you think?

To say it has nothing to do with the movie is stretching it a bit - don't you think? It has to do with the movie in the sense that his father is being talked about. But his father represents other people with the same views. This article is directed against the views of the father, and others who have that view as well. It is not an attack on the movie, as other people have used the father. The views of the father are nothing new and have been used by others.

OK. Then the email wasn't really clear. It was probably just this person passing along something, but it wasn't by him. I will notify the admin to change it.

Meant to ping you to post 75, in which I wondered if this was incorrectly attributed to Plaut. I hadn't known him to be such a humorist.
