Okay, Episode 1 officially rocks :)

The song lyrics definitely make much more sense with the video.

The historical intro at the beginning is very cool; and as I guessed from your description, Kenshin does indeed appear to be a ronin: "the samurai without a master, the warrior who had been set adrift, like a wave, on a sea of life: the ronin. The literal translation of this name, in fact. . .'would be wave man' and it signified one who is tossed about aimlessly, hither and yon, as by the waves of the sea. . .These masterless warriors were usually known as fearsome fighters whom a wise samurai, regardless of rank, skill in the use of weapons, or reputation, would not needlessly confront. . ." (Oscar Ratti and Adele Westbrook, "Secrets of the Samurai")

The animation is awesome.

Nice action on the martial arts side. I especially like the part where the Sensei disarms the renegade student by cutting his thumb so he can't use his sword.

Totally agree with Kenshin's exposition of martial arts philosophy--he said exactly what I was thinking as the other characters were debating the subject.

Like the comic relief, too. I see what you mean about Kenshin's eyes doing weird stuff, LOL! I've seen stuff like that in older Japanese cartoons, too--think all the way back to "Speed Racer" even, pretty sure in "Battle of the Planets" and "Voltron". Think I heard the "oro" but not sure if I've got it right yet. Also looking for the happy penguin nose thing :)

The main navigational stars surrounding Orion, starting with the big dipper. Use the handle of the dipper to "spike" out to Spica, then go around in a big circle around Orion to find Sirius, Procyon, Pollux, and Castor. SiProPoCa.

Then find beetlejuice in Orion's armpit, and a doobie in the cup (of the big dipper). Beatleguese and Dubhe.

He's not quite a ronin. I guess it's not called ronin Kenshin because I think the stereotypical ronin is a killer.

I love Kenshin's philosophy. Have been thinking about it a lot. I had a hippy pacifist professor once who insisted she would never use deadly force, even to defend herself or someone else. It was idiotic. Kenshin doesn't kill people any more because he doesn't have to. He's strong enough to protect those he loves without killing. The only way a 'don't kill' philosophy works is if you can defeat your enemy utterly without killing him - or make him your friend, which Kenshin does sometimes - or if your enemy is a basically good person/entity, pacifism works.
