It seems you haven't exhausted all of your options. Because you lay the blame at Bush's feet, I suggest you contact the HR department at the White House and see if they have an opening for you, there. Caution: display a cheerful disposition, it helps spread the goodwill.

The economy is a bit strange right now, it has been particularly since the war began. At one level, that shouldn't be surprising, look at the wartime economy in the forties, when everything was rationed, and by comparison this economy doesn't look so bad.

I spent several months out of work myself, so I sympathise. I managed to find some work doing something that essentially had nothing to do with my skills, it was not something I wanted to do forever, but consequently I enjoyed it, it was a lark. It was a break from a routine I was getting tired of before.

I'm back in my chosen profession, at a better rate (thank you Lord) and much more appreciative of it than I was before. Things are still pretty nip-and-tuck in my business, but I'll hang in.

Its odd, though, I note that steel prices are spiking upward. So even though my business is slow, someone's business is obviously doing very well. Someone is building something out there. And I notice that houses are selling very well, which means that people are making money out there. The restaurants are jammed where I live, so again, someone is making money.

I agree with the poster that recommended, if you are planning to go back to school, consider nursing, rather than law. Nurses do pretty well, and the demand is still pretty strong.

You may have to consider moving. If industry is leaving your area, you may have to go where the jobs are. I've done it several times. Its a problem once you are a home-owner, but I am prepared to do it again if it comes to it.

Life is too short to wait for it to come to you.

I take it you had some inkling that this whining screed, utterly unconnected to political and economic reality, would not be too well-received around here?

You need to get off your whining butt and do something. I lost my job two weeks before 9/11 and it took me more than 14 months to find a job. I did not blame anyone for my misfortune. Granted, I'm not making what I was making but I have a job that keeps a roof over my head.

You're talking to a South American about our economy? Funny all the South Americans are coming to the US and using up the resources that we Americans pay taxes for! Maybe thats part of the problem. Tell your South American friend to go back home if she thinks our economy stinks.

I've been looking for a job since October.

My job situation, however, is not the fault of the Administration. I'm not so naive to believe that the President pushed a button that said, "Layoff Michael King."

Likewise, I'm not so jaded that I could believe that (unless I were to get a job working directly for him) that whoever is in the White House post-November would magically give me a job either.

It doesn't work that way.

Life's a bitch, period. You buckle down, skip some of the extras, send up a few extra prayers and pound the pavement.

As for not voting at all, if you do not vote, then your opinion counts for jack squat. As far as I'm concerned, you don't have a damned thing to say if things aren't going your way in that event.

If you don't vote, you've checked out of the system entirely. You may as well pack up shop and leave the country, because your voice will be about as effective to Washington as Joe Canuck in Winamucca, Sasketchewan.

You want suggestions? Crack open a Bible, then crack open the want ads. It ain't gonna be easy -- nothing worth having is. But you will find something.

I don't understand what voting for Bush has to do with your job situation. I'm not voting for him, either, but at least I can state my reasons why.

BUT, is going to call timeout and apply to UCLA law school?

Ummm....*shakes head*....*sigh*

Has been a FReeper since 1998 and finds a friend from Chile more enlightened into the vagaries of a capalistic society than anything read on this forum?

Best of luck in law school. You've got the perfect mindset for the legal profession.

"Why is this happening?"

It sure as heck isn't the fault of President Bush.

Maybe it's because the Democrats wear out their tonsils talking down the economy.

If you think refusing to vote is the answer to your problem or will bring you satisfaction-it won't, unless you find pleasure in feigning helpless victimhood. In which case voting for Kerry if successful would keep you in the ecstactic state of tearful "poor me" for at least four years.

You have some growing up to do. You aren't the first to be looking for work, and won't be the last. Shifting blame to the government (in this case the President) or ANYBODY else for your situation is an extremely immature response.

Mostly though, you need to grow up about not voting because you are having a temper tantrum or a pity party, and realize that by willfully refusing to vote you are thumbing your nose at every person in our countries history that went before you and struggled, sacrificed, fought and died so that you COULD have the opportunity to vote!!

If considering the military or fighting forces in this regard is beneath your intellectual appreciation, perhaps you'd like to reflect on the womens sufferage movement and what it's meant to our country and women here and around the world. Maybe you'd like to think about the slaves and what the right to vote meant to them. They certainly found it a worthwhile endeavor to struggle for.

I find the attitude about not voting frankly, despicable.

Either grow up and start acting like an adult or admit that you are a child. Maybe a fully-grown, yet perennial child.

lets see here, there is the medical field (you could get your rn in 2 years and be making 120k a year after that.)

there is "you failed to plan ahead, its been 4 years already"

"you live in the highest priced housign in the USA (and in A LARGE HOUSE)" try making cutbacks, or moving!

try not blaming anybody, because this sort of thing (the economy) happens (as any law grad should know as i beleive economics is still required for them as well)

and as for not being personal, this is a personal statement to a personal statement. deal with it.

this isnt Bush's fault, you're better off than most in this country (even without a job) you have more options than sitting on your stupi thumbs and waiting to get burped.

get off your wimpy butt and find a job!

I was laid off in December of 2003. I couldn't find a "real job" until about one month ago. However, it's my own fault. I didn't prepare myself sufficiently to compete for the good jobs. I have degrees in Biology and Chemistry: not exactly practical. I was home with kids for 13 years before my husband got sick, and I went back to work. I should have kept my skills updated. Now, I am working for a small start up company. The pay is pretty good. I use computer skills, office skills and just plain common sense. I love this job and am continuing to upgrade my skills. I would not go into debt for a law degree because lawyers are a dime a dozen these days. Before I found my current position,I worked security. The money is better than retail. Actually, some jobs pay quite well. It is not really dangerous. I sat in large, secure buildings at night and looked for floods, fires, intruders etc. Also, when you are not making rounds(usually only one or two per night), you can study or read. I actually enjoyed security and learned some interesting stuff. I got to work on some high tech security computer systems-stuff that helped me get the job I have now.

I got my job because I knew someone in the company. I met my friend who worked for this company when she moved into my neighborhood-a single Mom with an adorable child. I have a child the same age. I suspected my friend could not really afford to pay for quality child care (is there such a thing?) and most kids hate the school care: boring. I offered to watch the daughter after school. I didn't ask for money because she was in a worse situation than I was. A job opened up at her company, and my friend suggested me!
Make contacts. Go out of your way to talk to people... you never know what might happen. Good luck.

I guess I'm not following your line of thinking either - yes many people have lost jobs but, as in the case of my husband, the attack on American by Islamic fundamentalists caused his industry to crash - We drew unemployment, I got a job - we lived on savings - we survived -

Is it the President's fault that Enron cheated millions of people? Is Tyco the fault of President Bush? These huge corporations hitting the ground caused a wave that changed many companies across the world - this is not the fault of President Bush any more than their grafting and corruption was the fault of the previous President (although many want to say so...;^)

Is this the only issue that concerns you? Abortion, taxes, gun control, Homeland Security - they mean nothing?

Please refrain from personal attacks. This is a personal statement.

You make a vanity post about your personal life and then you request no one make personal comments about you? Get a life, better yet -- get a job. Pity parties are not a pretty site. Try rereading this thread and seeking some good advice from those who answered. College is supposed to prepare you for the job market, it it hasn't so far what makes you think it will in the future? The one who needs to change is you, only you have control here. Good luck.
