I've about had it with people comparing the War on Terror with Viet Nam.
President Bush is not like the 4 Presidents that "managed" the Viet Nam war.
He's not like Eishenhower who 1st put American service men in Viet Nam in 1955
and who wouldn't let them fire their weapons.
The 1st US death was on June 08, 1956
He's not like Kennedy who wanted to quit Viet Nam.
He's not like Johnson who wanted to quit Viet Nam also.
He's not like Nixon, who had the silent majority behind him, and instead caved into the peace niks minority.

About Vietnam
The Vietnam war was the longest in our nation's history.
1st American advisor was killed on June 08, 1956,
and the last casualties in connection with the war occurred on May 15, 1975, during the Mayaquez incident. Approximately 2.7 million Americans served in the war zone; 300,000 were wounded and approximately 75,000 permanently disabled. Officially there are still 1,991 Americans unaccounted for from SE Asia.
Vietnam was a savage, in your face war where death could and did strike from anywhere with absolutely no warning. The brave young men and women who fought that war paid an awful price of blood, pain and suffering. As it is said: "ALL GAVE SOME ... SOME GAVE ALL"
The Vietnam war was not lost on the battlefield. No American force in ANY other conflict fought with more determination or sheer courage than the Vietnam Veteran. For the first time in our history America sent it's young men and women into a war run by inept politicians who had no grasp of military strategies and no moral will to win. They were led by "top brass" who were concerned mainly with furthering their own careers, most neither understood the nature of the war nor had a clue about the impossible mission with which they'd tasked their soldiers. And the war was reported by a self serving Media who penned stories filled with inaccuracies, deliberate omissions, biased presentations and blatant distorted interpretations because they were more interested in a story than the truth! It can be debated that we should never have fought that war. It can also be argued that the young Americans who fought so courageously, never losing a single major battle, helped in a huge way to WIN THE COLD WAR.

Great post, Brother. I've gotten tired of the media invoking Vietnam like an incantation of failure, myself.
My cousin and Godfather, Richard, died in VN when his medevac helicopter, MARKED WITH A RED CROSS, was shot down in 1969. His mother and father visit his grave every year on his birthday to this day.
It disgusts me to see how his, and their, sacrifice is denigrated to this day.

I heard FOX News today state that Kennedy got us in Viet Nam.
I guess those who died there from 1956-1961 just don't count.

Good Post Tonk.
Did you see the movie : The Quiet AMerican? 2002 . Michael Caine.
Set in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1952 during the French Indochina war, THE QUIET AMERICAN is based on the mystery story by Graham Greene - a good flick.. NOt well publicized or seen on many screens. Interesting take on how things "got started"

They, the media, tend to "forget" and ignore those who gave their All from 1956-1961

Thanks for that!

No, I missed that movie.

Thank you for posting this. The braying from the DemoncRATS about a "Vietnam-like Quagmire" is nauseating and disgusting. It does a huge disservice to the men and women serving. It places them in even more danger by providing aid and comfort to the enemy. Oh for a GIANT ROLL of DUCT TAPE!

The Following is a letter to the editor I just sent in to the NY Post. They're a good paper but I doubt even they will publish this but it was cathartic just writing it.
Dear Sir:
I was at first outraged in reading Senator Ted Kennedy's remarks accusing President Bush of lying and misleading causing, in his opinion, a credibility gap similar to President Nixon's. He then went further to proclaim that Iraq would be Bush's equivilent to "Nixon's Vietnam."
My outraged however faded into bemused irony when I realized this was coming from a man whose credibility was forever challenged when rather than notify the authorities that a young women was trapped in his car at the bottom of the bay he chose instead to ask a hotel worker for the correct time so as to establish his whereabouts. Of course the public soon learned that he was in fact the driver of the car on that fateful night.
Oh and one more thing regarding Mr. Kennedy's credibility, for this perhaps we can chalk it up to a fuzzy or hazy memory, but wasn't in Kennedy's Vietnam?
