Hogwash, pig swill, and dead taste buds. Whataburger's double cheeseburger with extra lettuce, tomatos, and jalapenos, will clean your nose, straighten your toes, and teach you to dance!

White Castles. Very good but again they just don't compare to Tommy's Chiliburgers. BTW, when I was a kid, the Royal Castle Burgers here in Florida were great. Even better than White Castle but even they don't compare to Tommy's Chiliburgers.

Veggie Burger with cheddar cheese, at NYC's Burger Heaven chain.

Veggie Burger with cheddar cheese, at NYC's Burger Heaven chain. Ummm...but can a Veggie Burger even be considered a burger?

Well, I certainly think so, since I'm a vegetarian. But trust me, those Burger Heaven veggie burgers could convince even a carnivore that they're burgers :-)

A place called Jucy's (pronounced juicies) in Longview, TX. Hands down the best burger in the world. Hand ground every morning. And yes, they are very juicy!

My favorite LA restaurant is Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles. Next time I'm out that way, I'll make it a point to try a Tommyburger.
It's my humble contention that the cheeseburger is the quintessentially American meal.
Don't get me wrong, I love apple pie, turkey on Thanksgiving, etc. But nothing says "America" to the world like a cheeseburger. And it's a beautiful thing.

KROLL'S, located across from Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI.
They are charcoal grilled burgers served on hard rolls with "the works", including a pat of Wisconsin butter. The best, the best, the best.

My wife practically lived on Tommy's chiliburgers while she was pregnant, both times. The kids turned out okay.
There's a tavern in Portland, Oregon, out toward the airport. Wish I could remember the name, can't offhand. They'd put a fried egg on the burger if you wanted it, but they were damn good without them. Everybody in Portland knows the place.

Whatever happened to Burger Chef? My favorite in Indiana when I was a kid.I grew up in Southern Illinois and Burger Chef was a dozen miles away. That still made it the closest fast food chain around. It is also the first time I ever had fast food.
I looked up what happened to Burger Chef as they all disappeared about twenty years ago. We used to have a Sandee's burger chain in town, but Hardees bought them out in the mid 70's. Below is what I found on a web page devoted entirely to Burger Chef:
General Foods sold Burger Chef to Hardee's in 1982. It was at this time most Burger Chefs were converted to Hardee's outlets, many were closed or sold-especially those with a Hardee's location nearby. Less than 100 Burger Chef locations were left.
The last known Burger Chef was closed in 1996, located in Cookville, TN. There are restaurants operating today under the name Burger Chef, but have no connection with the original chain.

Tell me P.O.E., I have long heard of Roscoe's, but the idea of fried chicken and waffles just doesn't sound that grand. Please describe the Roscoe's experience and don't leave out any of the lascivious details.
I can't believe we are this far in this thread and yet not a picture of Homer Simpson.

Very first job I had with a major corporation was
Gino's (Home of the Giant). Gino Giants were precursors to Big Macs. Applied for the job because I loved the burgers. They later merged with KFC, then disappeared.
My Roscoe's story.
Perusing the restaurant guide in the hotel room, there were the usual categories: Chinese, French, Italian, International, and (doing a double-take) Chicken & Waffles. There was only one restaurant in that category: Roscoe's. I figured if it had its own category in a major hotel in a major city, there might be something to it.
We hunted it down and were not disappointed. Fried or baked chicken, with light, fluffy waffles. There's basically two ways to do it: with syrup or with gravy. Of course, there's no rule on what goes with what. Plenty of choices of side dishes, from eggs, grits, sausage/biscuits, brown or white gravy, etc.
It's your basic, down home, real good, real bad for you, soul food.
