Besides this has been a great learning process for me as I've learned to debate and take heat when my reasoning process has been flawed. When I first started on FR, it was right after the Clinton administration was in office, and I was working on a government contract. A contract employee can be terminated by the contractor at the pleasure of the government. (At least one person from my office was fired because he went mano-a-mano with a US senator on a public forum.)

Additionally, there are nutcases and stalkers that can make your life miserable if they know where you live.

I now work for a major aerospace contractor that *hates* adverse publicity about its employees. So again, having a freepname saves them from potential embarrassment, and me from looking for another job.
