'ruruoni' means Wanderer. Kenshin is a name - Himura Kenshin, Battousi the Manslayer (it's worse than Tolkien! This guy's got 15 names and every few episodes someone else claiming to be him shows up!)
It's set in 1870s (I think) Japan, ten years after the Meiji Restoration that eliminated most of the power of the Shoguns and pretty much got rid of the samurai. That gives it some depth, all of the characters are trying to live in the new world that's been created. I'm a fan already.
Oh, and the fight scenes are incredible.
