The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
But not yet weary are our feet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Heck, there's lots of interesting stuff about the cold war that still isn't suitable for public consumption yet, and might not be for some time yet. Stay tuned...LOL! For that matter there's interesting stuff on WWI and II still coming out every year :) For instance, since you're out where you are, one interesting thing I'll mention is that during WWI the Germans tried to sabotage the logging industry and other industries in Seattle by using the IWW, a group which later helped form CPUSA--the lefties out there have deeper roots than even they probably realize. . .On WWII the thing that probably interests me most is secret weapons programs, and also the extent of German and Japanese sabotage attempts that was kept quiet.

You think that just now happened? Or did this happen before? ;~D
To: Fedora
True... the involvement of the CP-USA and it's ties to the Kremlin is only lately coming up to the light. Of course now they're replaced by ANSWER and other such fifth-column groups.
But there are other ways that the cold war was a lot hotter than advertised. Real warshots, and stuff like that there.

There are no sacred cows here.... only hamburgers.

I suggest switching to Seinfeld on 11. It is a show about nothing.... a brain absorbent!
To: HairOfTheDog
As long as it's kosher sacred cow burgers... then I suppose it's OK.

One of my pet projects is trying to document the links between ANSWER and the older groups. Working on an article along those lines which I'll hopefully post sometime soon.
But there are other ways that the cold war was a lot hotter than advertised. Real warshots, and stuff like that there.
I've heard a little about those from friends who were stationed where some of those happened. One book I have here mentions,
In 1977 Faith Campbell Johnson attempted to document the instances of Soviet flourishes between 1945 and 1973. . .Between 1945 and 1947 there were more than forty cases in which American or Allied (usually British) aircraft were shot down within Soviet territory or along its borders. . .[Between 1945 and 1949] there were nineteen Soviet flourishes. . .Between [1949 and 1957], Russia rattled her sabers a further twenty-nine times. . .
The various incidents are listed--mostly in Eastern Europe or the Far East. A few that intrigue me because of the relevance to the current situation are the near-confrontations over Quemoy and Matsu in the 1950s; the Cuban Missile Crisis of course; and the crisis between Pakistan and India in 1971, where they're still debating exactly what happened.

I'm stressin'
I have my mid-year review today and it has been a rather anxiety-ridden week getting ready for it. I was feeling really confident until the Big-She-Chief invited herself to sit in on a handful of our meetings. The others she selected have been in hot water for some reason or another- being stubborn, not getting data out to customers, etc- and so I'm freaking out: "What did *I* do wrong???"
My immediate supervisor has let slip on several occasions that she has no idea what my projects are (a deficiency in her management skills if I dare say) and therefore it is safe to assume that her supervisor, the Big-She-Chief, has no idea either. So now I'm tasked with drawing up a list of all of my accomplishments, training, meetings attended, data produced, etc- just to prove I'm doing something worthwhile. And I still might be in trouble for something I don't know about. (One of the other selectees has heard that she was "unfriendly" to one of Big-She-Chief's pets and will be spoken-to about her workplace attitude.)
I really hate working fer women.
