Kerry 1997:The administration... don't believe that they even need the U.N. Security Council

During a 1997 debate on CNN's "Crossfire," Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry made the case for launching a pre-emptive attack against Iraq, according to Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who appeared with Kerry on the program.

King recounted the debate for WABC Radio's Monica Crowley on Saturday, recalling that at the time, the U.N. Security Council had just adopted a resolution against Iraq that had been watered down at the behest of the French and the Russians.

According to King, Kerry argued: "We know we can't count on the French. We know we can't count on the Russians. We know that Iraq is a danger to the United States and we reserve the right to take pre-emptive action whenever we feel it's in our national interest."

"Crossfire" transcripts from 1997 are no longer available, but King said he'd share a copy of the Kerry tape with Crowley, who said she looked forward to broadcasting it. Stay tuned. Link

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So far this post at a blog is all been able to find on these Kerry remarks:
In my earlier post today I commented about a news story from Newsmax which reported that in an 1997 episode of CNN's Crossfire John Kerry, who by the way served in Vietnam, advocated a pre-emptive strategy in dealing with Saddam. Now my frequent commentor and fellow blogger Jaws has fished the transcript from the bowels of LexisNexis and provided me with it, the relevant parts are as follows:
JOHN SUNUNU:...This whole process gave our allies an opportunity not only not to follow America's leadership, not only not to allow us to lead, but to tell us we'd better not do what the president is now saying he might do.
KERRY: Well, John, there's absolutely no statement that they (France, Russia) have made or that they will make that will prevent the United States of America and this president or any president from acting in what they believe are the best interests of our country.
SUNUNU: But isn't what he has seen is a loss of U.S. leadership and an erosion under an administration that has failed to lead?
KERRY: On the contrary. The administration is leading. The administration is making it clear that they don't believe that they even need the U.N. Security Council to sign off on a material breach because the finding of material breach was made by Mr. Butler. So furthermore, I think the United States has always reserved the right and will reserve the right to act in its best interests.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now the words aren't exactly the same as reported in the earlier story but there's no doubt Kerry, in 1997, thought that a resolution from the UNSC was not needed because proof of Saddam being in material breach had been found. Further more he then believed a president doesn't need to worry about the concerns of other countries when the "best interests of our country" are at stake. hmmmm...now between '97 and 2004 what has changed?...hmmmm, it brings his world renown perchant for flip floppage to a whole new level. I don't know what is up with McCain but look at Missy Hildebeast...in red, with matching lipstick (not applied very well, bless her heart). Look at Graham, the way he is looking at her.

And let me tell you, what a stupid idea to have paper records and electronic records...a lot of money to do this and in my precint in Californa - we just went to electronic voting-it was a mess...the precint workers were not trained and this was with just electronic-if they had to reconcile paper and electronic voting, well it would create more confusion etc etc. Several people were turned away from the polls and told to come back later because of the switch over from paper to electronic.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., right, with Sen. Bob Graham, D-Fla., speaks to reporters during a press conference on Capitol Hill, Wednesday, March 10, 2004 in Washington. Sens. Clinton and Graham introduced a legislation Wednesday to require that computerized voting systems provide a paper record, ensuring that voters and that a paper record be available in case of a manual recount. Hey glad to see you!

This paper trail business is nutty - what's to stop either party from buying voting machines and printing out tons of paper receipts for their guy?

Of course, you make a valid point there.

Why don't they let Visa or AmEx do this voting thing?
They surely get our monthly numbers correct.

Our household, and many of our family and friends, were so bummed by the entire process/candidates/prospects that we didn't even vote in our primary this year - for the first time ever.

Big cheers up there.

Wonder if Kerry will ever dress up as a Texas cowboy, ala W? Till he does, here is something from Rush Limbaugh's site:

Kerry Wants to Shoot Osama - March 10, 2004 From the Chicago Tribune, "Though he always has opposed the death penalty, Senator John F. Kerry said Tuesday that the September 11th attacks made him realize that he would want to blow Osama bin Laden's brains out.".....

Now, folks, when George Bush said shortly after 9-11 2001 that he wanted Osama bin Laden dead or alive, remember the press had a heart attack? The press said, "That's not presidential talk. That's cowboy talk. This isn't the OK Corral. This isn't the Alamo. Wanted, dead or alive? Presidents don't talk that way.".....

I'd trust my credit card provider a lot more than I'd trust the poll watchers in Chicago.

Our primary is next week. I'll be in Philadelphia. I won't be voting either - only because I'll be away and because the winner for the pubbies is pretty much a done deal.

The dem primary for senate candidate to replace the moron Peter Fitzgerald will be interesting. Daly's lead guy has been embarrassed from his divorce papers being made public where he allegedly called his wife the "c" word numerous times. It's never dull politics up here.

Our boy governor is a disaster. He's a Daly lackey, too. This state has really gone to the dogs (of course, we're only just starting to recover from the ultra-corrupt Republican governor we ditched a few years ago - actually, he didn't stand for reelection. He'll likely be standing before a judge in the not too distant future.)

Goodness...it's always refreshing to see the "c" word played when speaking of someone you swore:. I vow to love you through sickness and health, through the good and the bad, through richer and poorer. You are everything I need, and at this moment I know that all my prayers have been answered and that all of my dreams have come true. This is the moment I have waited my whole life for. I promise to give you my all and I know that I could not ask for more from you. I love you and always will. This is my solemn vow.

You're right, of course, but I'm reminded of all the knockdown, drag-outs Hillary and Bill had, complete with language that would make a sailor blush. It's interesting to see what passes for marriage with some people. As for all those photos above - oh my gosh, what a dork Pepe Le Pew is!

Golly, I'm just now reading about the train station bombs in Madrid. I stayed right by the Atocha rail station my first time there - gives me chills. Some freepers are speculating that the Basques/ETA and the Islamofascists are working together - the Basques are separatists and heaven knows the Al Qaeda types don't appreciate the support Spain has given us in Iraq. Plus, ETA terrorists supposedly have trained at Middle Eastern camps. Who knows.

Those bickering Bushes - divorced couple Neil and Sharon - can't help fighting in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair and further embarrassing Neil's big brothers, Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida and President Bush.

Both Sharon and Neil (who last weekend married Houston socialite Maria Andrews) spoke at length to reporter Vicky Ward about their train wreck of a marriage, the role of the first President Bush in their divorce, and the lawsuit that Andrews' ex-husband, Thomas Andrews, has filed against Sharon for claiming that Maria's young son is actually Neil's.

Ward reveals that:

Neil suggested divorce in a May 2002 E-mail: "We're almost out of money and I've lost my patience for being compared to my brothers, for being put down for my inability to make money, and tired of not being loved."

A friend of Neil's, Jamal Daniel, bought Sharon and Neil a $380,000 cottage in Maine at Sharon's request: "Neil was embarrassed by Sharon's 'end runs' to friends, to ask for things."

Sharon exploded when she found Neil and Maria at a smoothie shop, calling the Mexican-born Andrews a "Mexican whore" and "Mexican trash."

After Sharon pulled some hair out of Neil's head, his lawyers accused her of practicing voodoo. But Sharon shot back: "I pulled Neil's hair out because I wanted to get it tested for cocaine, not because of voodoo."

The former President Bush refused Sharon's request for a $467,000 loan to keep her Houston mansion, telling her to find something cheaper. "The divorce is final," the elder Bush wrote, "[and] the best thing for you to do is get on with your life. Close the unhappy chapter with Neil, find a job, and look to the future, not the past."

I was wondering about the motivations of the terrorists in Spain - at least as to whether they are tied to AQ or other islamofacists. What a terrible day for Spain. Prayers their way.

Kitty Kelley's book on the Bush family is due out later this year. I'm sure she'll try and spring it prior to the election. She's the epitomy of the woman who says "If you can't say something nice about someone, please come sit by me."

I want to thank you all for your prayers during this past year. I have just returned from my opthamologist, and after all the tests, drugs, screaming, and thousands upon thousands of daily eye drops, I am now CURED!!! I can see, well I can see with glasses, but my eye disease is gone, my cornea has healed, and I have healthy eyes once again.

I do not miss being blind and it's such a pleasure to be able to read, watch television and drive again.

Thank you for all your support, my doctor and I never thought that this would be the result. He said today that it's truly a miracle.
