Is Anyone (Else) Noticing The AOL software acting strange?

Okay, here's the scoop.

Yesterday from noon on, I could not log on. Three AOL tech service calls to the Phillipines and/or India later, still no luck. I finally figured it was probably the modem. Got a new one today, rated at 56K. Installed it and the 8.0 Plus disc that came with it, it was working fine.

More than fine actually. It was reporting connection speeds of 115K, about three times what I've ever managed on the phone lines here. Judging from the speed at which mail scrolled, it sounded possible. Problem solved, right?

But.....

Today I went to the bar to get paid. A friend of mine there said he couldn't log on from noon yesterday until about 1am. When he could, it was slow.

Like I said, this morning it was running superfast. Now I'm looking at my 9.0 download. It says I have 6 hours left. But the last 1.5M downloaded in 8 minutes and I have 9M to go.

I mentioned all this to a mailing list, and a friend of mine in California who uses a cable modem said that she noted odd stuff too, but only in the AOL areas.

They might be up to something. Anyone else noticing anything odd?

Eric

I have seen some people call dial-up AOL "internet with training wheels"

I wonder what NetZero dial-up would be called "Internet via postal service?"

Nothing out of the ordinary.

You actually bought a modem to solve AOL's problem?

Take it from this former subscriber: find an ISP that is more customer-service oriented.

Unless you're happy with lengthy delays to sign on, repeated disconnections, slow speed when connected and any of a myriad of other problems typical for them.
