I thought the same thing about the commmercials!
Yeah Josh the Newfie. Though they're beautiful dogs it must be hard to choose the group winner.

The Newfy (Josh) is great, but his first in group guarantees that the Working Group winner will not be BIS.

Newfoundland

How so? Politics? Or because he was in the finals last year?
To: hole_n_one
Clarification......The Newfoundland pic of Joshua is from 2003
To: not_apathetic_anymore
The all-breed BIS judge is not likely to be "taken" by a Newfoundland when confronted with other breeds that will be more "focused." I don't know how else to explain that. The Newfy is fabulous, don't get me wrong. It's just a bit on the "sloppy" side when it comes to BIS. They don't stack well and stay "on task" as well as other breeds.
Can politics enter into the dog game? You bet, though that's not the case in Judge Clark's decision in this group. It's not all that common at this level - especially since it's all on tape! The worst case I've ever seen of politics at the Westminster was several years ago when the springer spaniel took BIS.

Gottcha. He's out there lumbering around having a good time, others breeds are trying to impress the judge.
To: not_apathetic_anymore
And he's about as impressive a Newfoundland that I've seen in years!
I think if you check out post #30, you'll see the likely BIS this year. In fact, here we go with the TERRIER GROUP now!

If that's their personality, lumbering ... I like that ... shouldn't that be part of the judging criteria?
Airedales are really classy.
To: anniegetyourgun
Well my standard wirehair dachshund and I will continue to hold our breaths that a dachshund will take the hound group (though we'll turn blue 'fore I suspect that'll happen:)
To: Indy Pendance
It is - as it pertains to the breed. But once you begin looking at 7 group winners in the BIS ring, it all comes down to "s/he who will not be denied" on that night. Usually that ends up being the more focused (like the Kerry Blue last year) or showy breed (such as an Afghan Hound or Poodle). As such, there are just certain breeds that will probably never win BIS at Westminster.
To: not_apathetic_anymore
I'm sorry, this breed is ugly, I didn't catch the name, but it has the pom-pons on it's ears.
To: anniegetyourgun
Is there a standard requirement for BIS?
To: Indy Pendance
That's the Bedlington Terrier. Not my favorite either, IP. Rather recalcitrant breed also.
To: anniegetyourgun
Cairn terriers are so cute!
To: Indy Pendance
Technically the judge is to select the BIS by comparing each to it's own breed standard - not breed against breed. However, you must remember that each one of these is a champion and frequent winner around the country. That means it's really going to come down to who shows the best on that night.
To: anniegetyourgun
I don't think I'd have the patience to show dogs.
