Radio talk-show host Hugh Hewitt today (3:30 PST, 2/4/04) made the comment that "I will never criticize anyone who served [in the military] and was honorably discharged."
Oh, *really* Hugh?
Then perhaps you will tell us why you felt it necessary to call Col. David Hackworth "a loser" last spring on your show?
After a disagreement with Col. Hackworth during the Iraq War, Hugh and subsequent guests trashed Col. Hackworth. Then, weeks later, after the "fall" of Baghdad, dear old Hugh could not wait to list Col. Hackworth among his "list of losers."
I know this is an election year, and nerves are frayed on ALL SIDES, but among my years of service was a year at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in South Vietnam with the 377th Combat Support Group and I am sick and tired of NeoCons like Hugh Hewitt thinking they have STANDING (to use a legal term that lawyer Hugh might understand) to lecture veterans on defense issues and to trash men like David Hackworth who might have the temerity to disagree with the Bush Administration on the same.
For good or bad, military service in general, and Vietnam-era service in particular, is a campaign topic, and the Hugh Hewitt's of the world would be wise not to take the Veteran's vote for granted. He and his deferment-junkie friends don't know a damn thing about us, what we went through, and what our thought process is. Suggestion number one might be to stop insulting our heros. But then again, what the hell to NeoCons know about heros?
FOXNEWS fired him because he meandered so much in interviews, he couldn't be relied on to make a cogent argument.
What is he? 70?
It's time for Hackworth to retire, gracefully.
Unwind, soldier. If Hackworth is a hero to you, fine. But he's an old man, and made a fool of himself once too often during the Iraq war.
It is not possible for those of us who went to Vietnam to comment on Vietnam or on the service of those who did go.
But we can damn well comment on the actions of Vets who inject themselves into public roles.
Kerry, for instance, disgraced himself with his antics after his premature return from the war.
Surely Kerry's not one of your heros?
And on Feb. 6, 1981 when Ronald Reagan turned 70 were you on this board encouraging him to "retire gracefully" from the Presidency? Just curious.
I do give you an "A" for ignoring the points raised in my post. If they gave silver stars for "heroism in changing the subject" I would not hesitate to submit your name. I mean that in all sincerity. An all-out effort and I salute you!
Reagan was not incoherent at the age of 70.
What exactly WERE the points in your post? I thought you were angry Hewitt dissed Hackworth? Hewitt wasn't the only one who cut Hack loose after Iraqi Freedom.
Let not your heart be troubled, as "real Republicans" will continue to marginalize veterans who have been there and done that.
Please don't be offended, but instead of adopting puppies I think I will continue to visit my fellow Veterans at my local VA. "Incoherent" or not, by your expert standards [and those of the brave Hugh Hewitt] David Hackworth will continue to exercise his first amendment rights. Will you have the decency to agree that at least he fought the good fight to have that right?
And, apparently, he's worn out his welcome on all of them.
Thanks for your service.
No doubt we all will sleep a hell of a lot better knowing we have your approval. God willing, the next generation will find out somehow that people fight and die for that right. As for John Kerry, service to country is not a vaccine from future reprehensible behavior. But when a chicken hawk like Hugh Hewitt calls the most decorated veteran of the Vietnam war a "loser" because he had the temerity to criticize the Bush Administration then we can comment on it as well. Assuming we have the right you just granted Col. Hackworth?
Oh, forget it. You have unwanted puppies to feed, and I have an old soldier to defend. No doubt the majority of those reading this thread think you are the one with his priorities straight. Now that will NOT make me sleep better, but I wasn't born yesterday either. Send me an address and I will send you lots of IAMS coupons. Friends?
IMHO, Hackworth is an opportunistic media whore. Some say he has done good things for the foot Soldier, if so, good for him.
Its his right to be that, its my right to say that.
Atributing incoherence to some because they are 70 yrs old is very stupid. Many people much younger really are incoherent.(Some even post on FR.)
