> What I'm writing for class, at least the first one, is just straight SF.

Cool. Sounds like that'll be a fun class! If you feel like showing your story to anyone when it's done, feel free to pass it on. I used to be part of a writing club where we'd critique each others' SF work, found it was pretty helpful.

> It's cool that you're published! Wow.

Thanks; but I hope I didn't make it sound misleading, LOL! Like I said, so far it's minor stuff--I won an annual essay contest at my school's history department which they published, got a few poems published in a school magazine, wrote the narration for a documentary my friend filmed for a local cable station, and most recently I've done some ad-writing for my friend's company. I have several articles and a couple nonfiction manuscripts that are close to being publishable, but I've procrastinated from finishing and submitting them, partly because of the perfectionist thing I mention, and partly because I get anxious over the marketing phase of the process, which I find somewhat intimidating. The novel I'm working on now is the first full-length fiction I've attempted. I think it's a good story, but right now it's too short--gotta figure out how to add 150 pages, ugh.

> I used to do some fanfic,

That's actually how I got started on the novel I'm working on. What kind of fanfic did you write?

> but otherwise I haven't even done web publishing. I have several dozen started stories. Always seem to flame out either at 7000 words or at 43,000.

Any idea why it flames out at that point?

I have been a beta-reader before myself. If you need one, I volunteer... um... as long as you're not writing a porno, of course.

The story I'm writing for class is really just a very cut-down and devoid of anything interesting version of what I'm writing for fun. Only told as straight SF. If I get finished with the real story I'd be happy to have someone else read it.

I started writing fanfic when I was about 10 or 11. It was classic Star Trek, based on the Blish adaptations. My character was the Vulcanoid T'Raylyn Talia Tajahaian.

And then there was the Battlestar Galactica stories ...

Fanfic is so cool. Jen, what does one have to do to web publish?
