Nice you have it running in the family. My cousin and I seem to have it in our family, but our parents didn't draw and I'm not aware our grandparents did, either, though we certainly got the overall "intellectual" side of our personalities from our grandparents.
I'm self-taught, also. I was inspired by reading comic books as a kid and trying to copy the style. Eventually that led me to read some actual art books :) I've been away from it for a while but I'm getting back into it lately. At this point I can draw in a certain style pretty well but my technique is limited because I haven't learned some of the formal methods. I'm trying to pick up the more formal side of it now so I can expand my range and make something commercially-viable, and also so I can illustrate my books.

My grandfather did ceramics, wood carving, metalwork, and painting as well as conte crayon, pastels, and making signs.
Unfortunately, my talent is best in graphite pencil.
