The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

>I'm sure Hair and ecurb can arrange for you to try fencing...their way...

The first kind seems artistic but not very practical.

ROFL! I guess I'll stick to my kind of fencing--looks like less work than the other kind :) Nice job on the fence, BTW.

Wish I could post pics of what we are actually doing now in fencing, but a friend has my camera for a couple weeks.

Thanks for explaining the nature of Dals so thoroughly :) I've seen the squirrel thing in action with other dogs--my grandparents' St. Bernard used to act like that whenever he saw a squirrel, too :)

He's narrated several kids books on tape. Do you remember the movie, Pete's Dragon? Jim Dale played the conniving traveling salesman who wanted to steal the dragon.

Don't think I saw that...but interesting just the same.

He's entertaining as a reader, in any case.

"Women want to read about men who are true, and upright, and do the right thing, even when it's difficult. And they should be competent, perhaps with an edge (or more) of danger."

Ladies like guys to be very good at whatever they do, of that I am sure.

As for what constitutes and ideal lady, either to read about, or to love, I haven't given it that much thought, but speculation on such ought to be interesting.

Sex appeal probably tops the list, but even defining that alone is challenging.

Thanks for the feedback on my question!

Yes, I was describing some extremes and it's true most characters don't fall neatly into either extreme, so the point that I should aim for complexity is a good one. My character is probably closest to Phoenix out of the characters mentioned, but she develops in that direction after initially being more "Marvel Girlish", to overextend an analogy.

The point on how a crisis can reveal true strength is also helpful. My character's development is largely about how she responds to a crisis that could've broken her if she was weaker than she was, but she survives it to become stronger than she thought she was, though not without paying a big emotional price.

On Charlie's Angels, are you thinking of the old one or the new one? I find them totally different--I liked the old one, but I don't like the new one.

Gotta take off here for a bit; back later, everyone! Thanks again for the help on this! :)

So it's their whim, and we all know how motivated school employees in general are.

BTW Jen, I didn't see this before. A little honey goes a long way with most people, school employees included. My mom taught in public schools, and so does most of ecurbh's family.

Ah.... not familiar with that one. Is it new?

It was interesting, when Chris was on Methotrexate they adamantly told him not to have any alcohol for the week he had the shot. (he didn't have them weekly, but like bi-weekly or monthly as needed) They said it made his liver too weak to handle the alcohol and that it could be damaging. When my mom was on it for liver Cancer, at much higher doses, I mentioned this to her, and she said they had said nothing to her about drinking or not drinking. I wondered if maybe they just view someone with liver Cancer as being too far gone to care about possible side effects to the liver, or what. Seemed to me they would want her to be as easy on her liver as possible, though she did like Margaritas at El Sarape on Fridays.

Camera is in the front passenger seat of the pickup --- I just have to remember *all* the things that I have to switch from my pickup to PQ's car in the morning!

Unfortunately, I would imagine that is the case...liver cancer is terminal and usually pretty swift...margaritas at El Sarapes wouldn't change that.

In a healthy person though, the liver is able to regenerate to a certain extent if allowed to.

Alcoholics just never give the liver the chance to heal up. The liver becomes scarred, scar tissue shrinks, the major arteries in the body that run through the liver become squeezed and you end up with hemmoroids in the rectum and in the throat (called varices) from the pressure in the vessels building up because it can't get through the liver. Varices are ticking bombs. They can easily rupture and that's all folks.

Had a friend who's mother died from them. Horrible.

Liver values start showing abnormalities when damage has occured. I once worked for a doctor and he had me call this guy and tell him his lab values showed early cirrosis...had to tell him to quit drinking. The guy was just silent for a while then said "Whattaya mean, quit drinking?" I said "Your lab values show that your alcohol intake is beginning to destroy your liver and you can't live without your liver, you need to quit drinking."

He just verbally bawled me out...who the h*** was I to tell him to quit drinking!!!??? I told him "Sir, I'm not telling you to quit drinking, your liver is."

He hung up on me...never heard what happened to the fella.

I took all the stuff to be packed over to my mom's this morning, to put into the trailer.

We have a TV to put in the truck, so we'll have that to watch on the way! They are swinging by here to get me after I pick up Joshua from school...

I'm not sure where we're staying this evening.

I imagine the guy kept drinking! Along the same lines as the guys with emphysema that try to figure out how to smoke around their oxygen tanks without blowing themselves up. Peoples is peoples, and most peoples is funny.

And just to be clear.... Chris wasn't alcoholic, just a college kid (fine line that might be at times ;~D)

BTW.... nice imagery with the rectal varices... ;~D
