The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Good grief, you work for frickin' nazis! That's a morale killer, if I ever heard one. It would have to be pretty dang good job for me to put up with crap like that.

20 minutes a day! Yikes!--I'd have a hard time dealing with that. I feel for ya! Hope you're able to find a better server.

Oh... that just wallows in lameness.

In exchange for what they *think* is a productivity problem they produce a morale problem, which of course is a productivity killer.

I suppose it has never occurred to them that it is impossible to actually measure how much *time* a user spends using the internet to hit web sites. The only thing they can track is what sites where visited and when, but there is no mechanism whatsoever to actually track how long a user's web browser is open, nor can they track how long it takes a user to read a web page. All they can track is when refreshes happen. Measuring web surfing in "minutes" simply cannot be done. The actual "time" that you "use" the internet connection is only a few seconds per web page.

Do you know if they are using an actual "key-logging" system? If they're this paranoid I'll bet they are... and *that* stuff is totally over the top.

Where in the hell do you work, anyway?

Yum! Crab Rangoon... Forget the celery sticks. Gimme a spoon.

Crab Rangoon is one of my favorite appetizers :) I like to go to a Chinese or Thai restaurant and order that with soup--either Egg Drop or Tom Yum Gai--before the main meal.

But I am taking a weekend trip out to Colorado, to look at a graduate school, end of the month.

Ooh...very cool. Take lots of pictures!

I think it is essential that you find a web-based resource that is just so stinking useful for your job that you end up using the site all day every day.

Blow the roof off the limits for a few weeks... and then when you show how useful the new resource is... tell them you have to stop because of the hard limits.

The new memo on internet access will probably come out the next day.

Ever tried WebEx...??? Online meetings all over the world... it would be perfect...

Very nice :) Incidentally, although it's not exactly the same, that top picture reminds me somewhat of my Dad's Ford Model A. Our Grandpa owns a Model T and a Model A and gave my dad the A recently.

Oh, believe me, these folks are experts at "morale killing." I work for Seattle Housing Authority, your tax dollars at work (or not!)

I think they might be logging refreshes, though I'm not sure. They've conveniently never explained to us exactly how our internet time is measured, so no one really has any idea what they can get away with. Meanwhile, you can only check your usage once the week is over, so you have no idea how much time you've spent online until it's too late to do anything about it. Nor can you test how you surf to check how it's measured.

How does a key-logging system work?

Maybe I should leave webpages open but in the background and see what happens to my usage...a week after the fact, of course.

Hmmm...I just realized I have someone I could probably ask who might know how it all works. He would tell me, if he knows anything. Maybe I'll do some investigative work and see what I can find out.

Crab rangoon? *drool*

I love those things. I should figure out how to make 'em at home. Except I'm terrified of deep frying in hot oil. ;-) Never seem to get it the right temp.

I will think about that idea. My problem is, I have such a low-level job there's very little need for me to be on the internet at all. I have one website that I log into for account information, and that's it, aside from an occasional zipcode search. Still, I'll keep that in mind. Maybe I'll find some sort of web-based training I can do that'll tie up my internet time...just enough to make the point.
