winmgt.exe is in use by windows, windows won't allow access to it, which is why the virus can't be removed from that file.

go to start then run then type msconfig, if it's there can you turn it off in msconfig? if you uncheck it, click ok, then you'll have to reboot. if its there and you can disable it, then you can remove the file. I did a search and I don't see that file on my drive.

In msconfig, you'll want to look under the startup tab.

I can't help you, but I just wanted to post a message here to thank the moderator for leaving threads like this up for a while -- I've gotten some helpful advice from knowlegable Freepers on things like this in the past.

OK, good luck. Backup anything you've created (pictures, bookmarks, etc).

$30. one time fee. Sorry that it costs, but 3 weeks ago I was being attacked by so many spybots and parasites and home-page hijackers that my computer was practically useless. I literally could not fill in any field of any length on any net page without a pop-up or pop-under showing up. I would have a dozen Orbitz or MSN or Netflix ads opened up to the point where my memory was disappearing. It was screwing with my stock trades as well. This was behind a Zonealarm firewall on a cable modem.

I tried about 3 different types of pop-up killers, NONE of which worked because the parasites had already installed themselves. The thing removed over 75 pieces of adware and spybots from memory, windows registry and programs. I am not particulary confident removing stuff from my windows registry; I knew if I mucked about I could really get myself into serious trouble, well beyond $30 of time/labor worth. This piece of software has worked very well for me. I run it every few days and it inevitably finds 2-5 new things that have installed themselves. It gets my reco.

Just for grins I ran it again just now while going out to get a snarfburger. I had run it and hosed out my computer 2 days ago. It found 12 parasites.

He found 34 in my registry.

One was a package called "Kontiki" that I got from CNET when I downloaded from their site.

Wonder what they (CNET), what the hell are trying to do!

I may send them a note!
