Virginia Beach pointers needed

Hey VA people!

I'm relocating to Virginia Beach in Feb. We have a place to stay for 3 months, but will have to find another place in the area after that. Which areas do I need to stay away from? I know that Norfolk and Portsmouth (sp?) have some rough areas - what other areas should I take out of consideration? I'll be working at Oceana and am willing to commute a bit. Thanks in advance for any pointers or help you can give me on this.

SWEET you'll be in our neck of the woods. We're in Oceana base housing and we LOVE it here. I think you're smart in wanting to stay away from Norfolk and Portsmouth. Your best bet would be to check out www.hamptonroads.com, that's the guide I use to get around the area. Well, I did my second enlistment at Langley AFB in Hampton and currently live here still. Stay clear of Portsmouth, and if you should come up to the peninsula, avoid the east end of Newport News, drugs and hookers all over the place. The Williamsburg/Jamestown area is rich with U.S. history so there's plenty to do and it's not far from Va Beach. Hope that helps. Oh, and just for a heads up, if you're gun owners or plan to be gun owners, I walked into a gun shop, selected a Glock .40 and was out the door with it in 10 minutes. So yeah, it's pretty easy to be a gun owner in this state, CCW's are pretty easy to obtain as well.
