Didn’t have any specific topic in mind for the kitty thread this week. The pictures have no obvious common theme. These pictures have not been featured in recent kitty threads, so at least we have some new material to consider. Enjoy.

Where are you that your cats bring you such a variety? My cats can't go out even though I practically live in the woods. A road nearby has become way too busy but worse, we have coyotes and fox, among other wildlife, that have caused neighbors' pets to disappear. As a result, Molly, our hunter, gets all the mice that come inside.

That kitty looks exactly like our Charlotte, and the word 'innocent' only applies to her when she is sleeping.
Happily, that is approximately 20 hours/day.

Just yanking your chain, friend. Not that I could go, I'm dwelling on that ticket you got there and my mind is on NH, not too far from here. It's going to be an exciting week.

We live just outside the Beltway in Fairfax County, VA. The back half of our lot is mature hardwoods and there are several acres of mature hardwoods behind us. But we live in a suburb so the traffic isn't that bad.

Speaking of mature hardwoods, my DH got up, looked out the window, and said, "I think we have a problem." One of the trees is leaning pretty hard - oak, at least 50 ft tall. If it come straight down it will hit between the garage and the neighbor's house but it could go either way.

We just put in several emergency calls to tree companies. No idea whether they can do anything, especially in this snow, especially since we're on a hill, especially since there is probably no way to get a truck down there, except maybe through my baby fruit trees. Dang. I think the baby fruit trees are goners.

Can you find anyone who can come out and look at limbing the tree or topping it? It can be hard work but you can use a rope saw.

We also have a fox, or maybe foxes, living back in the woods, but not coyotes, thank goodness. My "babykins" (photo on my profile) is a strictly indoor cat, but the other three are too used to going out. Once they get like that, there's no keeping them in, they yowl too much.

After listening to the yowling for long enough, I open the door and say "let the fox have you!" The two orange boys hunt in a team, so maybe they could actually bring down a fox.

We called a number of tree specialists out of the Yellow Pages and one off the Internet. The Internet guy should be here within the hour. He charges $50 just to look at it but says he can either take it down or stabilize it.

This year we had the most rain in the last 100 years, the record was set in 1889. And we have a drainage easement going through the woods, so the soil been waterlogged back there. I have been fearful of losing a tree for months.

Living on mostly ice age slag, trees in this area tend to have shallow roots and during wet periods they just fall over, so we're dealing with it on occasion. We saved a pine last year by winching it but it was only about 20 feet tall, plus it wasn't threatening any structures.

There is a 40 foot oak, about 100 feet from the south side of the house, that's been leaning for years (5º or 10º lean). It too, isn't threatening anything, so we monitor it and use it as a weather stick. 8>)

From what I've heard about orange cats, they are smarter than other cats.

The fox we see on the property are grey fox, unusual in that they climb trees (say bye-bye, kitty), are bigger than red fox and a bit smaller than coyote. You should be okay with red fox.

DH is the one who saw it, he says it was red. The dog saw it, too, and went nuts trying to get at it.

If we had a pet door, I don't think we'd have any worries, the dog would go out and chase away the fox, but given the propensity of the cats to bring home "presents," DH put his food down so no pet doors. When the kitties try to sneak in carrying a chipmunk that they want to save for later, the rule does seem wise.

Yes, dogs make a huge difference and just by being there can keep other animals away. Every one of the six houses in the immediate area had dogs years ago but didn't replace them and now that they're gone, we have deer in our yard almost every afternoon and even have wild turkeys, beside skunk, foxes, coyotes, hawks and flocks, and who knows what else.

If endangered lists were generated from my neighborhood, dogs and cats would top the list.

We've got a 20 pound Maine Coon. I'd put money on him over a fox any day. He looks a lot like a lynx.
