"The Day After Tomorrow". Stealth liberal movie plot alert.
Internet Movie Database. ^ | Jan19, 2004 | None

Plot Summary for "The Day After Tomorrow",

"This movie takes a big-budget, special-effects-filled look at what the world would look like if the greenhouse effect and global warming continued at such levels that they resulted in worldwide catastrophe and disaster, including multiple hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes (I don't quite get the science of that one), tidal waves, floods and the beginning of the next Ice Age. At the center of the story is a paleoclimatologist (a scientist who studies the ways weather patterns changed in the past), Professor Adrian Hall (Quaid), who tries to save the world from the effects of global warming while also trying to get to his son, Sam (Gyllenhaal), who was in New York City as part of a scholastic competition, when the city was overwhelmed by the chilling beginnings of the new Ice Age. In addition to all of the other challenges Dr. Hall faces, he's also going against the flow as humanity races south to warmer climes, and he's nearly the only one going north... (Rossum plays another student, and Gyllenhaal's romantic interest; Ward plays Quaid's wife and Gyllenhaal's mother; Serrano plays Quaid's boss)"

TOPICS: Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS:
This movie has been previewing everywhere now with a release date of 27 May, 2004 (Memorial Day). It looks like the main summer release. The preview only shows spectacular special effects with no mention of it's message or plot. If you've seen a movie in the last couple of months, chances are you've seen this preview. It's being marketed as "from the director of "Independence Day""and seems aimed at kids. I just wanted to give everyone here a heads up as I think it will become a hot news item.

Here's the movies' website;

I should add that I have no problem with a movie with a message, provided they're up front about it. It seems like the people behind this one want to keep it's agenda a secret.

LOL. It snowed in Honolulu during the Kyoto summit last year if I recalled. Then Al Bore talks about it on a record cold day. LOL. Will the projections show an ice age?

Global Warming! LOL What a riot.

Thirty years ago these same idiots were whining about the next ice age.

And the evaporation of our oceans. And global starvation. And the elimination of entire populations. And the end of crops. And the death of all cattle, chickens, pigs and the farms that would be destroyed and couldn't possibly produce enough food to feed us all.

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Global warming? Global COOLING???

Which one is it???

Or are they saying "yes," to cover all the bases, because they're too ignorant of facts to give a 100% answer???

God, I HATE idiot liberals.

I hope I'm overreacting, but when kids suddenly are scared about global warming this summer, people will know why.

When I saw the previews before "Master and Commander" showing tornadoes in LA, NYC hit by a giant tidal wave then covered in ice I said wow, I've got to see this one. After reading the plot, I'm not sure I want to see it.

paleoclimatologist (a scientist who studies the ways weather patterns changed in the past)

Is the reviewer describing the movie's plot correctly or injecting his/her own ideas into it? If the main character is a "paleoclimatologist," the climate changes he studies would have taken place long before modern industry could have had any effect. Ice Ages came and went long before SUVs, so the global climate obviously has some extremes built in.

I'm not positive but this might be the movie that is loosely based on the book by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber entitled "The Coming Global Superstorm", so ya know, grain of salt.

I believe you're right. When I saw the preview a few weeks back, something was said about "every 10,000 years a storm comes along...blah, blah, blah..." I came away with the impression that the movie was about natural, cyclical climate change, not some vehicle to advance a stealth eco-Commie agenda. I hope I'm right, 'cause it looked like the kind of movie I'd enjoy.

Global warming? Global COOLING??? Which one is it???

Here's a record of 450,000 years of temperature:

The planet is always warming or cooling. Variations such as those measured in the past two centuries have no general significance, they just happen.

Why "global warming" has become a political issue is a problem for psychiatrists.

Saw the title, thought it was a movie from an old book by Robert Heinlein. Too bad. I enjoyed the book as a kid.

Didn't they make this movie already? What was Waterworld all about?

The Heinlien novel "The Day after Tomorrow" was sometimes referred to as "Sixth Column" in either event, it was/is a good read. Amazon reports several novels named "The Day after Tomorrow"

Quoting from http://www.thezreview.co.uk/comingsoon/d/dayaftertomorrow.shtm

"Monday 27th April 2003: The Day After Tomorrow Update:
Just received the info that The Day After Tomorrow is based on Art Bell and Whitley Streibers book, The Coming Global Super Storm. Thanks to Shirley Palugyay!"

The back of my mind keeps telling me that I read a book about a global ice age and the ineffectual attempts of a scientist to try to stop it, including blasting off nuclear weapons in Greenland to stop a glacier.

My guess is they wanted to make a movie about global warming, but glaciers covering NYC looks so much more awesome than people sweltering in the sun. Somehow the new ice age will be caused by global warming though, no doubt.

Whatever angle the movie's plot takes, I think we can tell by the review that was posted how the media will spin it.

"a big-budget, special-effects-filled look at what the world would look like if the greenhouse effect and global warming continued at such levels that they resulted in worldwide catastrophe and disaster"

I see that the reveiwer has even managed to blame earthquakes on modern industry. No doubt volcanos are next.

Go to the website (the link is above) and check out the profile for Roland Emerich, the director.

Specifically look at his answer to the question "Your message to the world... Given a billboard for one final day, what would you put or say on it?"

I think it pretty much answers the question as to wheter this movie is trying to make a political statement or not....

Good call. This will be ALL over the news. "Can it really happen? Is it happening now?" I see plenty of Bush bashing over this movie ahead.
