The token of our love shall be
a red stone shaped heart
he gave to me
I wear it round my neck
you see both night and day
he is with me

He placed it round my
long thin neck
one afternoon when we met
and he also promised me
forever his love I would be

This little heart of stone
is ours lasting through
the longest hours
when we are apart for years on years
and it is washed by many tears
there is no me, there is no he
a lovely twosome are we

and he also promised me
forever his love I would be

My Promise
I will always remember the moment
Beneath October's gray sky
When she took from my hand a small present
Wrapped in white, and then she asked, "Why?"

"Darling, today is your birthday,"
I told her, now puffed up with pride
"And after the joy that we shared last night,
I want you to be my bride."

She opened the box and she kissed me
At the sight of what was inside
Diamonds and sapphires all in a row
My promise, where love does reside.

"Oh, sweetheart, it's lovely," she told me,
And she raised her left hand up to mine
I trembled as promise met true love's desire
And her love seemed to flow like sweet wine.

"With this ring, I thee wed," I then told her
And the smile on her face was sublime
After all we had shared it was natural
That a wedding should cap my love's rhyme.

But the ring that I gave her fared sadly
Love's promise was just not enough
To keep my life's love near, beside me
My companion when times got too tough.

Her perfect blue eyes now do wander
And my pain is more than I can bear
It stalks, the gray sky of October
Bringing winter to my sad heart's care.

I think of that ring, blue and shiny
With diamonds for children we'd share
But I'd change not a thing, for my promise
Stays with my life's lover, so fair.
