Dizzy and Daffy Dean

In tribute to Dizzy Dean and brother Daffy Dean, two of the best (Dizzy anyway) and most colorful (both) pitchers of the 1930s, I hereby commence a new feature of this blog. We'll keep track of appearances of Howard "Daffy" Dean (when the candidate articulates ideas that are simply dumb) and Howard "Dizzy" Dean (when the candidate says things that are simply wrong).

Let me say, right off the bat, that we should be much more concerned about the Daffy Howard Dean than the Dizzy version. Daffy Howard Dean is the one who was full of conviction that capturing Saddam Hussein didn't make America any safer, and that the best way to improve the economy (that's the one that's already growing at 8.2%, by the way) is to take away the Bush tax cuts (you know, the ones that helped the economy rebound).

I predict in advance that most sightings of Dizzy Howard Dean will fall in the "cheap shot" category. They'll concern things that shouldn't define your view of a candidate: lapses in memory and careless misspeaking amid a grueling campaign schedule. But part of the fun of tracking Dizzy Howard Dean statements is imagining the field day the Bush-haters would have with these same goofs if committed by President Bush.

I'll inaugurate the Dizzy category with this item from today's Washington Post. You have to scroll down to the bottom of this story, "Dean Now Willing to Discuss His Faith," to see that, when Dean (now making an effort to publicly talk about how important religion is to him) was asked which is his favorite book of the New Testament, he responded The Book of Job (from the Old Testament). If Bush made the gaffe, do you think it would have appeared before the 17th paragraph of a 21 paragraph story?

I would rather have Dizzy Dean running the country than Howard Dean.

As a Cardinals fan I take great offense of the use of Dizzy and Daffy(even though Paul hated to be called Daffy) Deans' names being used for this turkey.

Dork or Doofus, would be much more inline with what he is.
