Anybody in here every been published--pointers please
Posted on 01/01/2004 10:51:33 PM PST by faithincowboys
I was wondering if anybody on this thing has been published. I am heeding Dubya's campaign advice to write articles and subit them to newspapers.
I would appreciate a list of local and regional papers that would be receptive to a submission and conservative opinion.
Anybody that knows the business would be a huge help.

Sure, I'll send you the one I wrote about Reno. BTW, I'm on the east coast (it's very late) and smarting from a college football loss.
I do admit that I think and type too quickly at times.

Yes, I see them. Clearly, I meant to use the word ever. It was a very casual post. I wrote in the wee small hours of the morning. One would hope that the world class grammarians and National Spelling Bee Champs on FR would
cut me some slack.
Jesus, no wonder liberals think folks on the right are humorless and mean-spirited.

I am going to have to send you the Reno piece in a day or so. It isn't on this computer.

Thanks. Great anecdote. I wish I had gotten started back then. I bet you still have a copy.

The more you post, the more antagonistic you get.

You also might want to take a class in reading comprehension. I didn't offer up an article I had written for criticism. I merely asked if anyone knew how to query a paper, which papers have opinion pages that are center-right and which papers are receptive to unsolicited queries by writers who have never been published.
I was not asking for criticism of my writing (esp a late night post) and anybody who knows the definition of the word context would have known better. Basic manners is another topic.

see post 48.
Lucky for me, the noxious people on this thread won't be making the decisions on whether I get published or not. They'd be lucky to have a paper route.

Just for you......
FSU sure does make a habit of missing chippy field goals, don't they?

What a distasteful little creature you are.

Ask your local library about writing clubs in your area. Members of such a club will be far more helpful than anything you have received here.

I hadn't thought of going to my local library. It sounds like a goods idea.
Thanks.

You need look no further than this thread to see that.

I get published every day. I type my thoughts into this little box on
Free Republic.com and just like that, my words show up on the website for the whole world to see. It even has a little spellchecker box so that I do not make embarasing spelling mistakes.
To: faithincowboys
I publish my own website (which clearly doesn't count) and have been on a few other websites (which barely count). I've been in the letters to the editor of various local papers and once made USA Today. I'm not experienced, but I'll throw out a few comments.
My first rule is never to send anything on the day that I finish writing it. I always write it, edit it, rewrite parts, take a walk, re-edit, re-write, get something to eat, re-edit, re-write, sleep on it, and repeat the process. There is tremendous value in looking at something well after the initial passion has passed from one's brain to the computer. That second, third, fifth, or tenth look will show errors that were not obvious when I first wrote the piece.
My second rule is to try to be timely. Sometimes, this rule contradicts the first one, but I try to obey both. If there's been an abortion protest in the news and the paper has covered it, they're more likely to consider abortion letters. If they haven't been covering abortion, they seem more likely to ignore it. A letter that blends with the rest of their coverage just makes more sense for them to publish than one that doesn't seem to relate to anything.
I've never had any luck with NewsMax or World Net Daily. I've never really approached a regular paper about writing a column. I think you'd have a hard time with either of those efforts unless you already knew someone in the organizations.
If you are interested in having another person look at your writing and give some critical comments, I'd be willing to do so. I'm having a harder time finding time to write my own website, but I'm willing to help people. I still think we need good conservative voices in the news.
Resolving for 2004

I am going to be done with my piece (its been buzzing around in my head for a week) in a couple of days. I'll try to send it to you before I unleash it on the wider world.
Thanks so much.

It looks like your spell checker isn't worth much.
