Organ Donation: It's all about LIFE

There are two essential steps to saving lives through organ donation

1. SHARE YOUR LIFE. Decide to be a donor.

Transplants provide hope for thousands of people with organ failure. In addition, hundreds of thousands more can be helped with tissue transplants. Unfortunately, the need for donors is much greater than the actual number of donors. Your commitment to organ and tissue donation can save lives.

2. SHARE YOUR DECISION. Tell your family.

The most important part of deciding to be a donor is telling your family. Talking about donation doesn't mean talking about death. It is talking about the opportunity to give another person a second chance at life. Even if you have signed a donor card or indicated your wish to donate on your driver's license, you need to tell your family since they will be consulted before donation can take place.

	Important facts about donation:
•	There is no national registry of organ and tissue donors. Even if you have signed something, be sure you have told your family of your wishes as they will be consulted before donation can take place.
•	All major religions approve of organ and tissue donation and consider donation the greatest gift.
•	An open casket funeral is possible for organ and tissue donors.
	•	There is no cost to the donor's family or estate for organ and tissue donation. Funeral costs remain the responsibility of the family.
	•	People of all ages and medical histories should consider themselves potential donors. Your medical condition at the time of death will determine what organs and tissue can be donated.

Bone Marrow Donation: The Living Gift of Life

Marrow transplants are the only hope for survival for many children and adults with leukemia, aplastic anemia, and other fatal blood diseases and cancers. Unfortunately, nearly 70 percent of these patients cannot find suitably matched marrow donors within their families. They need to find unrelated marrow donors - people who have volunteered to donate marrow if ever matched with any patient in need. A national registry of marrow donors is maintained by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP).

Because tissue types are inherited, and some tissue types are unique to certain racial or ethnic groups, a patient's best chance of finding a match is within his or her ethnic and racial group. Currently, the majority of the volunteers on the NMDP Registry are Caucasian. While all volunteer donors are welcome, there is a critical need for minority donors to help the many minority patients searching the Registry.

You can become a volunteer donor through your local donor center if you are between the ages of 18 and 60 and are in good health. To find out the center closest to you, and to learn more about the donation process, go to the National Marrow Donor Program Web Site (www.marrow.org) or call 1-800-MARROW-2.

The Washington Post is thrilled to report on Bush's Hunting trip...President Bush Starts Off The Year With a Game Try

Bush, who is spending New Year's week at his Prairie Chapel Ranch, spoke to reporters this afternoon for the first time in 10 days, after a father-son quail shoot at the ranch of a family friend in Falfurrias, in the scrubby brush country of south Texas, 360 miles from here.

It was Bush's first hunting expedition as president, and journalists were not allowed to see him with a gun. Speaking to reporters before the short flight back to his own ranch, Bush said he and former president George H.W. Bush had "walked a lot of territory, watched the dogs work and knocked down some birds."

"I think I shot five," he said. "The limit in Texas, I believe, is 15. I'm not that good a shot, but it was a lot of fun."

OK, Iowa Granny pinged me to an article earlier this week from the Peoria (IL) Star Journal that was all about how Peoria and Champaign are THE hot spots for Al Qaeda in the midwest - not Chicago, not Detroit, but right where I live.

I have been worried about this for a while although did not know of the literal "hotbed" we'd become, and have long considered sitting in on some of the Muslim mtgs on campus. Problem has been that I obviously don't "fit in."

After reading this article, I'm scared spitless - not that I'm in any danger but that our police and sheriff's department don't have a clue - the Peoria police chief only learned of it when the Peoria Sherriff, who just happened to attend an FBI update meeting recently, found out about it and told him.

Clearly, law enforcement is missing out on what the FBI knows. I'm considering staking out the mosques around town and doing a little of my own investigative work. Folks, we have a cyclotron right here on campus and a nuclear facility 40 miles due west on a small, local lake. It has been shut down for a few years, but the radiocative material is still there. My campus has one of the few supercomputing centers in the country. We have the kind of assets that these chumps would literally kill for.

Putting things into perspective

The next time you hear a politician use the word "billion" casually, think about whether you want that politician spending your tax money. A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into perspective in one of its releases. A billion seconds ago, it was 1959. A billion minutes ago, Jesus was alive. A billion hours ago, our ancestors were living in the Stone Age. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate Washington spends it.

The Democrats are complaining on how long the war is taking, but consider a few other timelines. It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51-day operation. It took less time to find Saddam's sons in Iraq than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records. It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Teddy Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick. It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in Florida!

Scottish actor ALAN CUMMING has joined the cast of a TV remake of THE GOODBYE GIRL.

The X2: X-MEN UNITED star will join already-signed PATRICIA HEATON and JEFF DANIELS to play MARK BODINE, the off-Broadway director of RICHARD III, in which Daniels' character stars.

Heaton will play a divorcee who shares her apartment with Daniels' aspiring actor character.

The film will begin filming this month (JUN03) in New York and Vancouver.

I wouldn't encourage you to do your own investigating. Let the professional do it.

Be alert, stay safe. It's not likely they will strike in C/U, only that they're congregating there.

I wouldn't go to any cocktail parties or keggers held at the nuke plant.

However, it they put a notice in the paper and say they're dividing their day lilies and giving away the excess, an exception could be made.

Since the Chief of Police in Peoria knew nothing of this until just days ago, and the Champaign Police Chief refused to comment on the article, yet NEWSWEEK had this information in their June 16, 2003 article, I have to wonder just how much the "professionals" are doing about this. I'm inclined to think nothing at all, otherwise we'd be hearing about raids of apartments here.

I'm not afraid to do my own snooping. My only regret is that I have only one life to give to my country. I'd just like to be effective in my snooping.

What do you think about calling the FBI and talking to them about it?

Since you don't speak Arabic (I'm guessing) you might find someone who does then collect as much of the local literature as you can. Find the local businesses or mosques and find out if they have websites. If they do, go to them and click every link, see what's what.

Mornin', Betty! Went to see "Peter Pan" last night...I wasn't expecting much, but this is a really superb movie! Beautiful cinephotography---they can always get me with dreamy Victorian London cityscapes, and these were the best I've ever seen. Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series) is wonderful as both Mr. Darling and Captain Hook.

But the real clincher was Rachel Hurd-Wood, who plays Wendy.

She's stunningly gorgeous! Our 15-year-olds had told me going in that she was an amateur. She's never acted before, simply walked into their open auditions and eventually won the part. We'll be seeing her for many more years to come.

The girls just flipped over this movie. It has a little sexual tension between Peter and Wendy, nothing overt. But that's irresistible to girls that age. If you have teeny boppers, take them to see this movie.

DENISE Rich and her party guests got an eyeful New Year's Eve when a "tall, beautiful brunette" [that leaves out Chelsea or any other Clinton] at Rich's annual bash decided to take it all off and go skinny-dipping in the pool inside her $25 million Aspen house. "The woman had had too much Veuve Clicquot, and took off all her clothes and started doing acrobatics in the pool," our spy said. Rich, not known as a party pooper, had to call an end to the antics when male guests decided to leave their female partners to watch. "She had a servant tell the woman, 'You are fabulous. You are divine. But you must get out of the pool - right now!' " ...

PINHEAD pop singer Jessica Simpson and hubby Nick Lachey, of MTV's guilty pleasure "Newlyweds," were treated like royalty by the city of Miami on New Year's Eve. Taking a break from rehearsing for their Orange Bowl halftime performance, the kooky couple were whisked by ambulance with a police escort to a party at Opium Garden. [I hope the taxpayers of Miami appreciated this!]

WASHINGTON, Jan. 3 — He left office nearly three years ago, but Bill Clinton, the youngest ex-president in modern times, is still the go-to guy in Democratic politics. All of the party's major candidates for president say they call on Mr. Clinton for advice. They say the former president always seems eager to talk politics, and one says the former president sometimes seems to relish the calls as an excuse not to work on his memoirs.

"He said to me once, `I shouldn't be spending this much time, I've got to be writing my book,'" this candidate said. "But if you get him at home or in the office and he's not traveling, he has the time. And he loves it." ....

Dr. Dean stirred his party's ire last month when he seemed to suggest that the Clinton era was one vast accommodation with Republicans. Rivals and party moderates swooped down on Dr. Dean, denouncing what they said was a cheap shot at the first Democrat who had been re-elected since Franklin D. Roosevelt and who had presided over the longest economic expansion in American history. Dr. Dean said in an interview that his rivals had twisted his remarks. "The other guys were so desperate, they just made that up out of whole cloth," he said. "There is no distance between me and Bill Clinton."

But Dr. Dean said Democrats had to distinguish themselves from Mr. Bush. "Centrism was fine, but you can't keep moving right," he said. Some thought Dr. Dean had learned a lesson. ...
