That's not the way to do it. You press "Reply" on the Dumbies thread, enter "mfulstone" into the "To:" field, and type "Ping" into the "Your Reply" area.

It does get old, mful. What I have learned, however, about asking to be taken off ping lists is that it only works for a short time. Pretty soon, the number of newcomers or "theme" threads increases and the pinging builds up to the former crescendo. Resistance is futile.
