I'm in Clear Lake, TX and looking into CCW. Anybody have suggestions on a local class or even in metro Houston?

...you might wish to contact Carter's Country (on I-10) and see what they suggest. i got mine in Austin a few years ago through a class offered by McBride's (one of his daughter's was the instructor). quite a simple process to go through. good luck!...

West side of Houston. Very large range, good safety.

Find a good martial arts instructor and stick with it. You need the mindset and a whole-body set of motor skills to go with the weapons training.

Check with any of your local pistol ranges indoor or outdoor. They should be able to tell you where to go, or at least point you in the right diection. THey just might give lessons themselves.

Thanks, I'll see what I can do. Used to fence a bit, so I understand the whole-body bit. Clunky in one limb throws off your aim with a blade, as well.

Unfortunately, there really isn't that much to the training. It's an eight hour class on legalities and and a pretty easy target. Someone said you could miss all the shots at the farthest target and still pass. Go to the Texas Department of Public Safety for the particulars.
If you're interested in learning how to shoot, Thunder Ranch may have been your best bet but I believe they are relocating to one of the Northern States.
I have told everyone that if given a choice, they can't do better than going to Jeff Cooper's Gunsite Ranch. He is the one who has taught all the others. It's the Mecca of the shooting world.
To learn to shoot in the easiest and safest fashion without going to a school, find a IDPA match near you. Ask about equipment and watch the first couple of matches. As you get familiar with styles and modes, you can join the IDPA for a year and normally, the club is open on match days. You don't have to be a member of a particular club. They'll just charge you more for the particular match. If you're willing to work during the match with pasting and resetting targets, they'll be more than happy to help you.

Thanks for the info. I haven't shot the gun I have for a number of years, so I know I'll need some training up. Perhaps a class.

Wait just a second. All this about Houston and all of that and you're on Lake Levon?
Hell, I can teach you a few things. I'm in Mesquite. I assumed you were down by TEXASCOWBOY'S area.

Lake Levon? Is that a funny name for the Clear Lake area? I'm near Johnson Space Center, that general area, and we're actually "Houston" in terms of what we write for an address.

Sorry, I put in Clear Lake and it directed me to a little town Northeast of Dallas. It's in a bay of Lake Levon. I didn't notice the Houston reference.
In that case, TEXASCOWBOY should be able to help.

Indoor range, small classes, very friendly and knowledgeable people.
They will set you on the right path "mind-set" wise too.
No range Nazis either.
