Return of the King boffo at BO: $100m take in 24 Return of the King, the third installment in Michael Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, has racked up a stunning $US57.6 million (NZD $98 million) opening day box office take.
In the US alone, the film earned $US34.1 million with the balance coming from 19 international markets, including New Zealand. The film broke opening day records in many market territories -- including Great Britain, Germany and Scandanavia, according to Hollywood Reporter>.
Global opening day records set by the film include biggest Wednesday and biggest December day. The film is said to have been the third biggest opening day in history and the sixth biggest single day of all-time, the HR reports.
The film made $US8 million on midnight screenings alone, which took place at 2100 theatres worldwide.
In all, 3703 theatres showed first day prints of the film.
E!Online says the returns officially crown Peter Jackson "the lord of the bling " and notes that, if it maintains its pace, "the film could become the first film to pass the $US1 billion mark worldwide since 1997's Oscar-winning Titanic, which raked in an astounding $US1.8 billion. "

We'll be seeing it again on Saturday. More than glad to help it break the $1.8 billion mark. I wasn't that impressed with Titanic anyway - I thought Leo's acting left much to be desired.

I'm seeing it this Saturday. Go Frodo!
That said, I'm glad that only TWO members of the cast (Viggo Mortenson/Aragorn and Anthony Serkis/Spegol) have opened their mouths about their anti-war views and anti-US involvement in Iraq. I refuse to let these Demopuke leftist a**hole interfere with my enjoyment of the film.

Well: he is the "King of Pop."
Or so I'm told.
To: trajanus_red
Everyone should note that the $100 million figure is in New Zealand dollars.
Still: that's $57.6 million US dollars, and that ain't shabby for opening day.
To: Corin Stormhands
Hey, knock it off.
Grima may have been a traitor, but he had good taste in women (even if the woman in question didn't care for him). He wasn't a pederast.
