vanity- help with "Crummy public schools are producing a crummy workforce" stmt for class paper

"Crummy public schools are producing a crummy workforce and that is really killing us in the global work place."

I'm trying to write a reasoned response to the above as if it were (another) letter to the editor of a newspaper, for a class assignment (social, multicultural based foundations of ed).

I am soliciting any notions (on either end) for ideas, statistics, pointers, websites, etc.

Please help. Send freepmail, respond here, whatever, but soon because this is like a final due in a couple of days. Thanks!

I'm sorry. I assumed you were in middle or high school. It sounds like it is what you are writing instead of how much. All my English instructors in college were , ah "special" In my first year of English/lit I had a professor like this. She was heavy with the red pen also. My first draft was usually a "D" . Even though she irritated me to no end I later realized that she really must have wanted to teach her students creative writing or there would not have been "do overs". I learned a lot from her (even though as a person I did not like her). She had a style that she liked and I learned to write the way she wanted. I would go in with the attitude that your professor isn't biased (even if you know she is) and ask for help. Most teachers will work with students if they know they are trying. I hope this helps. Hi Steve:

I have had may share of teachers like those.

Some points to consider:

1. Most jobs require a certain set of basic skills: Coming to work on time, being responsible, being able to read, being able to do at least basic math, being able to write clearly and communicate clearly by letter and work of mouth and being able to think (NOT feel) about what the job requires you to do today, next day, next week and so on.

2. Many schools reward feeling rather than thinking (can you provide concrete examples?) and effort rather than results. I have heard some kids graduate high school without being able to read a diploma or understand how to analyze a bus schedule.
