The Guild 11-30-2003 The Dems' Changing Tune on Iraq; Past Quotes Reveal Hypocrisy
ChronWatch ^ | 11-30-2003 | Jean Shaw

It’s no secret that Democrats’ opposition to the war in Iraq has more to do with politics than principle, but the following collection of quotes (which has been making its way around the Internet) provide further proof.

''One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line.'' -- President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

''If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program.'' -- President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

''Iraq is a long way from [here] but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face.'' -- Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Feb 18, 1998

''He [Saddam Hussein] will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983.'' -- Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

''[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs.'' -- Letter to President Clinton, signed by Sens. Carl Levin (D, MI), Tom Daschle (D), John Kerry (D, MA) and others Oct. 9, 1998

''Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process.'' -- Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

''Hussein has . . . chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies.'' -- Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

''There is no doubt that . . . Saddam Hussein has invigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies.'' -- Letter to President Bush, Signed by Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL,) and others, December 5, 2001

''We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandated of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them.'' -- Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002

''We know that he [Saddam Hussein] has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country.'' -- Vice President Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

''Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power.'' -- Vice President Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

''We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction.'' -- Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

''The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons. . . .'' -- Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002

''I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force -- if necessary -- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security.'' -- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002

''There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years . . . We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction.'' -- Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002

''He [Saddam Hussein] has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do'' -- Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002

''In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members. . . . It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons.'' -- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002

''We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction.'' -- Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002

''Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime . . . He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation. . . . And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction. . . . So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real. . . .'' -- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003

I saw the Gulfstream land, too! ;>)

I'll be watching for that gear she was displaying yesterday.

It may be too warm for that new fur. I hope she wears it anyway. The sweating will be a good preview of menopause for her!

Good morning, all. Can't wait for the details of Dubya's visit, HLL! I'm still trying to decide whether I can make the trek to Pgh. tomorrow to wave a sign of support.

Awards for what, exactly? Page Six reports:

New York Magazine will have an engraved award waiting for P. Diddy when he arrives at The Four Seasons restaurant for the New York Awards on Dec. 15. With a new owner expected to take over the weekly early in the new year, the mag's annual luncheon honoring local luminaries is suddenly hotter than ever. Also receiving awards will be Hillary Clinton, Al Franken, Richard Meier, Tim Robbins, Kevin Kline and Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.

Chuckie Schumer running for NY Gov?

Sen. Chuck Schumer denies that he's contemplating entering the 2006 race for governor. So why did fund-raisers for New York's senior senator recently ask some of their big donors not to give to state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who almost certainly is? Moneygivers tell us they've been asked to "keep their powder dry" and not write the big checks for the crusading AG - because Schumer just might want to move to Albany. full story

Probably can't stand the stench of serving next to NY's junior senator. From the same news source, blahblahblahBarbraStreisandblahhatesGeorgeWBushblahblah:

Barbra Streisand is working to get another Bush-bashing expose on the best-seller list: "The Five Biggest Lies Bush Told Us About Iraq," by Christopher Scheer, Lakshmi Chaudhry and Robert Scheer. Streisand, her hubby, James Brolin, and Norman Lear will join forces to launch the latest revelation of Republican mendacity at a party at Arianna Huffington's L.A. home on Thursday...

Do your best to get to the 'Burgh, Mountaineer! Dubya needs you.

And have an Oyster House fish sandwich for me please! I lived there in the early 70's and can still taste how good they were.

...but have you considered storing all the Christmas gear in its own place and labeling the boxes?

There is always someone wanting to take all the sport out of the season.

The WH Christmas tree has arrived and when Laura accepted it today she said she may go to Afghanistan in the spring...On the President's trip:" "We were anxious, there was a lot of anxiety; the girls were nervous," she said. "But we're all so really proud of the President. We were just sorry we didn't get to go with him."

Yes, tis a fine tree and Laura and staff will be busy...they only have three days to get the place decorated.

IG-I can relate about the lost crystal trees. I purchased a 32 inch Santa a few years ago, on sale a few days before Christmas. I displayed it for a short time that year, then packed it away in a black garbage bag, somewhere, and have been looking for it every year since.

If these are they, they sure are pretty...

I made the mistake of renting "Two Weeks Notice" this weekend...Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock. Blechtttt! Not only does the movie never develop a reason these characters would be attracted to one another. In their enimical fashion, Hollywood just had to make a political statement.

Bullock plays an activist lawyer trying to save historical buildings from the conglomerate wrecking ball. Hugh Grant is the richy rich owner of the development company. His name is GEORGE WADE (his assistant actually calls him "Mr. Dubya".) He's a creep. All the company wrecking balls have a huge "W" on them, as do his skyscrapers, helicopters, etc. I guess Holy-wood thought subtlety would go over the heads of us little people. Don't waste your time or your money on this one.

(Grant's latest, "Love Actually" is also a big stinker. Saw it Friday night....boring Benny Hill-type humor.)

Ugh, Hugh Grant - too much twitching, mugging and tossing of hair for me. Mr. M and I were talking just the other day about how there hasn't been a movie released in the past several years that we wanted to spend money to see. Of course, we're a couple of cheapskates, but really, what a waste of money most of the Hollywood tripe is.

Gag alert:

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, Dec. 1 -/E-Wire/-- Oceana, a leading non-profit ocean advocacy group dedicated to restoring and protecting the world's oceans, today announced that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton will be a recipient of its 2003 Oceana Partners Award. Oceana will recognize Clinton for her many successful efforts as a Senator and as the First Lady to protect the nation's oceans and waterways. The award will be presented by her longtime friend, actor-activist Mary Steenburgen, on December 3rd at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

"Senator Clinton's commitment to preserving the world's oceans has been a tremendous boost for ocean advocates everywhere," said Oceana CEO Andrew Sharpless. "From protecting fish breeding areas to cleaning up environmental health hazards, [to smelling like an old dead carp], Senator Clinton has fought to prevent the irreversible collapse of fish populations and marine mammals, and to ensure that other sea life remains healthy and vibrant. We are proud to make her an Oceana partner, and we look forward to working together in years to come."

Clinton has quickly distinguished herself as one of the Senate's most passionate advocates for environmental and public health protection. She has used her seat on the Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee to challenge the nation's environmental agencies to do more to promote environmental conservation. She is also a steadfast supporter of restoring Long Island Sound, an important nursing area for many ocean fish species. And earlier this year, Clinton joined California Senators Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer to strike provisions in the Energy Bill that would have undermined current protections against new offshore drilling along California and other coastal states.

Producer Brian Grazer, Director Ron Howard and Ocean Explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau Also to be Honored ... full story

Oh please, Hillary the Environmentalist. If only she would don a flannel shirt and sit in a canoe, then we'd know for sure she's an environmentalist.

My trees are totally colorless. No decoration or color at all. They are an assortment of sizes and look really great placed on a mirror on a coffee table.

This is great.

The French Foreign Ministry went on strike today! Yep, all those diplomats and ministers walked out all over the world...LOL! And the left thinks we should be counting on these guys in our war on terror. What a joke.

French diplomats and other Foreign Ministry personnel staged an unprecedented strike Monday to protest planned budget cuts, shutting down embassies and consulates around the globe and hindering services at home. From Madagascar to Rome, Washington and beyond, embassy personnel walked off the job for the one-day strike, according to the leading union at the ministry, known as UNSA-USMAE.

How could anyone tell they weren't working?
