Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 26, 2003

Posted on 11/26/2003 5:11:30 AM PST by RikaStrom

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

osculate \ohs*cue*late\, verb:
osculated, osculates, osculating; transitive, intransitive verb
osculation; noun
deosculate, deosculation; (fondly)
exosculate, exosculation; (vigorously)

1. To kiss..
2. Mathematics: To have three or more points coincident with.
3. To come together; contact.

A Plain Old Kiss
Some people need a peck or two;
For others a simple smooch will do;
Too many, a graze will stimulate;
A few may want to osculate.
And then, there are those who need a smack,
For flowery words they have a knack.
But all I want from you is bliss,
Which you can give me with a plain, old kiss!
- Arr. Ara John Movsesian

Etymology [Latin scul r , scul t-, from sculum, kiss, diminutive of s, mouth. See s- in Indo-European Roots.]

In the article I posted (from yesterday's paper) and the editorial in today's there is token - and I mean token - mention of a "few" places that have been hurt a bit.

Laying off 22 of 26 employees is more than just a "bit."

They are falling all over themselves claiming EVEYONE just loves it because there is so much compliance. the only way they can judge compliance is through the number of complaints. There is actually very little compliance, but in general people are just not snitches.

It also burns me up that they are only focusing their enforcement raids and inspections on bars - the stooopid ban covers EVERY SINGLE business in Delaware with very few exceptions.

You know of course he wrote the great "City of New Orleans" song, as well as Buffett's "Banana Republic" and backed on "Son of a Son of a Sailor" but I love his proto jazz rap "Talk Backwards":Sdrawkcab Klat (Talk Backwards). Words and Music by Steve Goodman & Mike Smith

Hey everybody wherever you are
They've got a new way of talking and it'sGonna go far you take the letters in theWords, turn 'em around; say the last one First and check out the sound, Talk Backwards

I know what you're thinking; that it sure sound strange
You talked forward so long that it's hard to change
But it's just like metric once you get the drift
You twist your tongue and give your palate a lift.
You take your favorite phrase, read
It in the mirror, practice that about a half a year
and then sdrawkcab gnikiat mi em ta kool you're a regular talking bassackwards fool

> Talk backwards

Talking backwards is the new sensation,
Talking backwards is sweeping the nation
You amaze your friends when you start to rap
Don't say pass the butter, say rettub eht ssap.
Rettub eht ssap? Rettub eht ssap
And if you're out with a girl and she's a little bit shy
don't say I love you; sayUoy evol I.
uoy evol I and I always will,
Now see if that doesn't take off the chill

Talk Backwards

Just the otherday I was walking down the street
And there was this little girl I thought I'd like to meet.
I said excuse me miss butSserd taht teg uoy erehw. thgin ta tuo emocYeht srats eki I era hteet ruoy
And I said am I getting through to you yet?
She said you're a gent in the first degree
And I love it when you talk backwards to me

Talk backwards

You never can tell, but one of the nights
Those who talk backwards will demand their rights.
They'll rise up angry and get a solution in the form of an amendmentTo the constitution, that guarantees 'em freedom Of reverse elocution
and then every T.V. show that airs will have to be captioned For the forward impaired

Talk backwards
