Very few people need central air in dry western states, unless by choice. I used to live in Fort Worth, Texas and it was hotter than hell, but dry enough to use those thingies that I cannot remember the name of right now. What are they called? It just circulated water around a unit.

Okay, Mo, we are going to caravan to grannies. Everyone sign up. Won't she be surprised to see us on her doorstep. LOL

Westy, once when I was house hunting before I built this one, I visited a show room home. It was a very expensive home, way out of my league. But, I will never forget the windows. They were all sealed in as a picture window would be, every one of them in the house. When I questioned the realtor/builder showing the home as to why I could not open the windows..he said "no one opens their windows anymore, they just run their central air". I laughed so hard and then made my exit.

The wife use to open windows now and then in the summer, to air the house out she said...I'm a dirty ol man so I don't bother...lol....

You stay closed up all winter and then you don't open them in the rest of the seasons? I cannot believe.
I am from the deep south and hate winter here. Come the first mild day and my windows are open wide. In fact, I do not even run my central air in the summer. I would rather sweat (oh excuse me, southern women do not sweat, but glow) than be cooped up. But, I do have trees and floor to ceiling windows, attic fans and ceiling fans.
