My cat, before the one I have now...was eighteen years old when she died. I got her as a kitten, and she looked and acted like a true Russian Blue. My children and I doted on her, but she was tempermental at times. LOL She was always as healthy as a horse, so to speak, all her life. But, as she began to slow down, I talked to the kids. We agreed that she would have no heroric measures taken to prolong her life if she became ill in her old age. One day, she did not eat or drink and the next day, she died. We buried her wearing her pearl necklace in the yard next to St Francis statue.

I hope Nermal recovers. My Maine coon cat, Maia, now has chronic renal failure, but is so far doing well. She's 14, and otherwise healthy. She's going to the vet tomorrow for her fluid therapy. She gets that every two weeks to keep from getting dehydrated. Cats with renal failure get dehydrated, because the kidneys can't concentrate the urine anymore, so they lose too much fluid. She's also on a special low protein diet. That's really helping, because her creatine levels have actually gone down a little bit, according to her most recent blood test. I just hate it when our little fur friends get old and sick.

At Nermal's age, I wouldn't take take heroic measures to keep him alive if he were seriously ill, but I certainly don't want him to be uncomfortable or in pain if it can be helped. He's pretty hearty for the most part. I hope he hangs around awhile longer. He is the best cat I ever had.

I was not lecturing or being judgemental...I was just telling you the story of my cat and me.

Ha!! My sister married a Derbyshire. My sister's name is Isabelle Jean Derbyshire. Her hubby Reg is a real limey and we love him.!! He of course, cannot say certain words properly but we overlook that!!

So do I, but I wouldn't take anything for him. He was actually my daughter's cat, and Tyler loved him too. Both of them will be here at different times this year, and I really want them to be able to see Nermal. Neither of them has seen him in nearly 3 years.

Nice photo! I don't want to keep Maia going so long that she is miserable. Right now, you'd never know she had a problem. She's slow, because she's old and kind of arthritic, but she seems happy and content, not suffering at all. The fluid therapy isn't anything heroic, it just keeps her healthier longer. We can even do it at home, if it needs to be done more often than every two weeks. It's just an IV fluid administered just below the skin between the shoulders. The trick is getting to her to hold still while you do it!

Nermal seems to be feeling a little better. Yesterday I couldn't even tempt him with tuna...and he loves it. This evening he was actually in the kitchen fussing at me. And he's stopped hiding, (he hides when he doesn't feel good). He got mad at me tonight when I gave him his medicine. I usually don't have a time giving him medicine, but it's hard to do without hurtng his mouth. After a week, my arms will probably be shredded.

Actually, all are very cute.
The newest arrival is a girl.
She was born last December & is
irresistibly cute, like all the
kids in this family are (or were)
at least when they're babies.
