To see the country and get the hell away from people...So I can have room to spit and lord knows a jillion other reasons....If you are city folk you will never understand...So stick with the huddled masses....lol...A 3 or 4 day mule trek up into the mountains is just not your thing....
.....Westy......
To: Mo1
Guess I flunked my southern gal in training huh? The good nuns taught you better, Mo.
To: westmex
I am not city folk. I was reared in the country. But, I don't spit. LOL I like to get away from everyone...but why 100 miles? And no, I don't like to ride a mule. Been there and done that...they are as stubborn as you, Westy.
To: Conservababe
It is 221 miles between the gas station at El Rosario and the one at Guerrero Negro in Baja Calif. The one in Catavina has been closed for years...You might find a Mex selling gas out of a 55 gal drum along the way, but don't count on it...Hey it's adventure...lol

To: westmex
So, if you run out of gasoline, do you tow a spare mule to ride?
To: Conservababe
There are a jillion places down there I never got to see....The easy ones with a beach are overun with gringos doing their I'm superior act with the natives.....
.....Westy.....
To: westmex
Tell me about the natives. I am curious.
To: Conservababe
So, if you run out of gasoline, do you tow a spare mule to ride?I've never ran out of fuel down there, but if one does one of two things will happen...A Green Angel will come along or more apt a Mexican will stop and help you how ever he can...The Gringos won't, they are all scared of the banditos....
.....Westy......
To: westmex
Yes, I can understand that....it is kind of like us southern folks.

The desendants of the old time Californios are great people...They are polite, courtious, and will go out of their way to help you...As long as you arn't an ugly american and there are a lot of them down there. They are family people and love their kids...The mainland Mexicans can be a different matter, the crime and big city sins can spill over to Baja, but they tend to stick to the few big cities in the Baja...They don't like the wilderness either...lol...I use to pick up hitchhikers down there in places...won't pick them up here in the States....Does that tell you something???
.....Westy.....
To: westmex
No, I am still confused. You know the history and can teach me. I just learned Louisiana history.
What is an old time Californio vs mainland mexicans?
To: Conservababe
Can your library borrow books from other libraries??? If so try getting ahold of most any of Harry W. Crosby's books..."The Last of the Californios", "The Kings Highway in Baja Californio", " The Cave Paintings of Baaja California", "Antigua California" and for a different look at it all, look for Graham Mackintosh's "Into a Desert Place"

Well, I prepared my fireplace last week. And when I do that, I pile up books to read in front of a fire.
I will certainly look up those books. But, you might be surprised to find that they are on the book shelves in my quaint rural library. LOL

Baja was settled by mainly the Jesuits...They brought over soldiers, tradesmen, servants, etc...The Jesuits were expelled by the Spanish King and the Franciscans took over. They built one adobe mission, but Baja was to tough for them so they moved on to Alta California, our California. The Dominicans took over from them and built a few adobe missions...The Mission period was about over. The Indians having died off from desease the mission system collapsed...The ex soldiers, servants, trades people, etc founded ranches up in the mountains where their decendants live to this day...They are called Californios...This is a very short simplified history...Read the books if you can...

None of them were in my big County Library system, but they found copies all over the country and borrowed them for me...I later ran them down in various places and have my own copies.....
Mackintoshs book is the adventures of a Brit in his walk around the edges of Baja...
