.... but I'll be damned if I can see any difference between some 'Militia Colonel' with more tattooes than teeth and an 'Armed Warlord'.

In some states, such as Missouri, some militias are state sanctioned. They are called to help sometime along side law and military in a crisis situation, such as floods.

I think your caricature of the militia member is absurd.

I am familiar with Organized Militias, Texas has a State Guard which is the organized militia, as well as a National Guard.

However most 'militia' is the unorganized militia, and I am familiar with them too.
They are overwhelmingly a bunch of overweight paranoid clowns who never served in the military, except maybe the 'Colonel' who was a corporal 25 years earlier.
They are out drilling in the woods with silly weapons in case the UN Black Helicopters come over the Canadian Border en' masse or in case the Ruskies drop in by the millions using parachutes, just like in "Red Dawn".
